LS3 AC Delco Oil Filter?
#21
LOL.....I usually just take what ever decent quality filter that comes with the 5 gallon jug plus free filter deal. Seems that they are usually a decent brand. And what ever brand filter i put on last is of course the best there is because I have it on my car..............

I'm not a fan of el-cheapo retail Fram filters either but recently bought 4 of these at Wal-Mart since they were deeply marked down and a lot cheaper than their bottom of the line filters. They must have been slow movers so they marked them down to get rid of them. I've watched several videos comparing the top rated filters and these were as good as any of the highly rated filters as far as construction, design, filtration medium, silicone seals, coil springs for the bypass and anti drain back valves, the gauge of the metal in the cans and the total weight of the filter assembly.
I just stick with the UPF48R as it's readily available for a decent price and they haven't F'd it up yet.

Wixx XP, K&N and Mobile 1 are all well constructed filters. My personal preference is Wixx XP.
What makes a good filter?
1. # of inlet holes, more is better.
2. Silicone anti drain valve vs rubber found on cheaper brands.
3. Coil by pass spring vs cheap stamp steal spring.
4. Metal filter end caps vs cheap composite/cardboard.
5. Higher number of filter pleats with wire backing for better filtration and filter support.
6. Synthetic media vs paper.
It is also interesting the construction of some filters are exactly the same, but with different name brands.

[QUOTE= The pf48e is a cheesy replacement with an internal plastic cage. They are known to fail.
I use the PF48e since it is recommended by GM. They are on-the-hook under the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty if the filter fails and damages the engine. If these filters were truly prone to failure, there would be an epidemic of engine damage claims and this has not been the case.

Wix is my filter of choice. Buy 4 at a time ( to cut down on shipping costs) for the Vette from Rock Auto. Very

Be aware Fram is not owned by Honeywell anymore. It was bought out by the Rank Group. They also bought Champion Labs. Long story short the company merged Fram with Champ Labs and then went bankrupt. IIRC they split Champion Labs off and left Fram with Autolite. So, a lot of the current Fram stuff has Champion Labs design and manufacturing.

If someone wants a free pf48e they just need to stop by my house.

I think windy buys the 5 gallon pails of non-detergent oil from Tractor Supply. Hey, $50 -- why not?

I always used the PF48 on my 2011 GS since it was brand new.
However, when they replaced the good quality PF48 filter with the piece of crap PF48E ..... I then started using only the UPF48R

UPF48R, Mobile 1 113, Wix, or PUR-1 (not the cheapo purolators) are my preferences. Friends don't let friends use Fram of which PF48e's are. Cut them apart and look at the construction, lots of youtube vids. The Pur-1's are pretty good, along with Wix,

Safety Car
I want to give full disclosure. I have a 1968 Camaro with a 327, 4bl. 4 sp. I ordered the car in March of 1968 and got it in April of 1968. The sticker price was $3214 and I paid $2889.
The car with original engine now has 206K miles on it. It was burning oil in the late 1970's so I had a clean up bore and other things done that I have since forgotten, but it was typical 327 worn out items.
That car and original engine has used fram oil and air filters 95% of the time.
I had a Buick GN as a daily driver for 5 years and over 50K miles using fram oil filters
I had a 1997 Z-28 Camaro that I used AC Delco or fram filters.
In 2003 when I got my first Corvette I used only AC Delco filters for the 10 years I owned it
On my 2013 I have only used AC Delco oil filters
Do not flame me, I am not defending nor advocating buying/using fram filters. I am only saying that I have never ever had a fram filter fail and one of my engines ruined by that filter.
I do not agree with some of the above comments that AC Delco oil filters are bad or junk. GM is not dumb nor are they geniuses but they would not put a low class filter on the extremely fine engines we have in our Vettes.
