Scammed on facebook
Hello,
So I posted on Facebook wanting to buy loudmouth 2 exhaust for C6 vette. Person messages me with pics, detail, everything seemed normal. So we negotiate a price (350 used) and I send money through Facebook via PayPal. My big mistake was sending friends and family accidentally. So everything seemed legit until they wouldn’t send tracking number. So yeah 5 days later I realized I had been scammed. No exhaust and no money. Go to PayPal they say go to bank. Call bank and they say go to PayPal. Do not deal with a person named Anna wright. Lesson learned here. Ugh

Sellers don't mind as it saves the 2.91% comm. When a buyer sends F&F, his/her address doesn't show (yours in this case) and there is no provision for a tracking # in the PP system. Because PP set this up as a convenience for F&F, not to trade goods/services.

There is no protection on FB like there is on Ebay, I only deal local people with FB marketplace. I see it and pay cash and move on. Same way with selling. Local only with cash.
I hate scammers. They make it bad for everyone. FB marketplace is fairly new and they have a long way to put proper security measures in place. Hate that happened to you, but too many mistakes were made in this transaction.

If it's any consolation - you're not the first, or the last to take a loss lesson. They make us smarter the next time

Tough lesson learned here, never use the friends & family option as a buyer unless you personally know the seller

I found out the hard way using PayPay through Facebook Payments even though I used “pay for goods or services” & not “friends & family”. What PayPal said is that Facebook Payments is the actual seller who then transfers the payment to the selling individual so you have to try to get your money back from Facebook Payments - which is impossible.
I’m currently working with the department of consumer affairs in TN to try to get my $ back because the individual who ripped me off (Dave Hale, Madvette Motorsports) runs his business out of TN. So far he has ignored contact from the TN Attorney General’s Office & Consumer Affairs.

I tend to buy on eBay. Bought a lot of stuff, never had a problem..

I'm about to make a $1600.00 purchase through PayPal. I understand not using F&F, but what other precautions are there? i intend to use a CC to fund the PP transaction. Is that sufficient for me to take action if it goes sideways?

As long as you aren’t using the friends and family, you’re good. PayPal will refund your money if it goes south. They are actually great to work with. It takes a few weeks but you’ll get your money back.

It's better to read about this directly from PayPal than listen to he said, she said.

I'm making a big deal out of this, but 98% of the time transactions are fine. 2% of the time they go haywire and the seller disputes your claim. PP will act as arbitrator, but the stronger argument wins.

FB & PP are nothing more than modern day pic-pockets. Your one of hundreds every day whom are fleeced every hour of the day. On the good side, you’ve shared with others this issue and they can avoid the same... these two organizations are plague on modern society.

Paypal won't help you BC you used their convenience service. They made no commission on the transaction and that puts you in a bad place. If you used a CC you MIGHT have some help, but if you did it to fund PP for a F&F, no. Any other bank transaction like a check or cashier's check used to fund PP....no.....

So you are standing on the outside looking in at Paypal and you are the expert? I’ve been using Paypal since 2002. I use it all the time both in my consulting business and in my hobbies. It is a very safe way to buy/sell when you cannot be face to face with the other party.
