There's a lot of people that have big pickups that can't drive them.

Hate to see that; but what really pisses me off is when someone does something like that and takes off instead of sticking around or leaving a note admitting they made a mistake and taking responsibility for their actions. Fortunately, it looks like minor damage and should be easily fixed.

I know just how you feel!
Some people truly are dirtbags and take no responsibility. The good news is that once it's fixed, you won't be able to tell (minus your deductible).

Not to lessen your pain to get this repaired, but thinking if it was a pickup, the driver may not have been able to see how close he was and/or feel the bump when he made contact. It's entirely possible he never knew he hit you. The bumper cover can flex so much in that area, it could be pushed in an inch with nearly no pressure. I just pushed mine in that far with my hand. I know this sounds like "that'll buff out", but it might.
Like cmonkey713 said, pull out the taillights, insert light and a mirror to take a look.

I'm not sure why the body shop says it will be months if the baffles or more are damaged underneath, though.

Tough break Ed. Had the same happen to my Dodge Stealth years ago. Luckily had a witness and azzhat was caught.
My neighbor across the street would park his car right behind my side of the driveway. Had a F250 4 door then and could not see his car due to the angle of my driveway as I backed out. I had asked him not to park there but he did not listen.
One day before sunup I pegged him with my trailer ball. Punched a hole in his door. Just left a copy of my insurance card and left. He does not park there anymore.
Hope the dealer does just as good of a job as they did on the front.

You can remove a tail light and have a look inside yourself. Stick a cell phone in there to take pictures.

. There is so much flex back there it might not have even been felt by the offending driver. Good luck with the repair.

You said in your original post that someone in a pickup hit you. Was there an eyewitness who may have gotten a plate number? I assume someone saw it happen because you seem to know what type vehicle hit you. Anyway, I hate jackasses that hit and run.

Hey Ed. Very sorry this happened to you. I know how I'd feel so not too hard to feel your pain.
Do you think this could have been done intentionally? Not to upset you even more, but noticing your vanity plate, someone could have taken offense to it, enough, if they were in a beater truck thought they'd take it out on you?
People can have visceral reactions to bumper stickers, political statements, vanity plates, even nicer cars that take up two parking spots. I say this BC I used to run vanity plates. My wife has had a couple of interesting ones on the Jaguars she's owned. One day we had it parked at a large Cars and Coffee here in Scottsdale. I was standing by the car (not looking like the owner) when a couple of guys saw the plate and made a comment to each other that was rather snide. I thought - what would he have done if the car was parked, say in a restaurant lot and he was in a beater or walking by with a key in his hand? Would he have taken it out on the car? After that, I ditched the vanity plates on any of my cars.
Would be interesting if there was a video capture of it.

The conundrum. Enjoy the driving experience and subject our cars to potential damage....or garage queen them and give up the pleasure of driving them .It sucks that it was hit & run....but even if the driver had been waiting to exchange info....the damage was done. Hope it's a relatively low cost repair.

The backerupper saw how dirty your car was and figured it was a beater and you wouldn't care.

Sorry to hear this happened to you Ed! Every time I leave one of my "fun" cars in a parking lot I have to turn around to look at it as I'm walking away, not just to admire, but surveil the situation for loose shopping carts, cars with kid seats or whatever else might pose a threat to my pride and joy. That is one of the few drawbacks of owning these awesome cars. Hope your repair is quick and superficial. Best of luck!

No witnesses, but it's obvious it was a pickup that hit me because of how high up the damage is. If it were a car the damage would be much lower.

This is why I barely drive the GS. Little bit ago I needed to run to the post office a couple blocks away & thought I’d take the GS. At the last minute I decided to take my wife’s Wrangler - glad I did. I pulled into the parking spot and was gathering the mail I needed to send when the woman parked next to me just flung open the door of her Lexus suv right into the Jeep. Thankfully the Jeep has rockrails on the side and her door slammed into them instead of the Jeep door.
She got out and profusely apologized but only her car was damaged. Last week I took my son to swim practice in the GS & backed into a corner spot as far over on the passenger side as I could leaving about 3ft between my driver’s side & the parking line. Come out after practice and there is a Jeep Grand Cherokee so close to my car I could barely open the driver’s door. Guy came out as I was trying to get in my car & I asked him if he had a hard time seeing the bright orange car or parking lines, he just gave me a dirty look and drove off
It’s sad that a majority of people have zero respect for anyone else or their property.
