MN6 Tranny Fluid
I've searched the forum and seem to get more confused rather than enlighted. Simple question: what is the correct GM transmission fluid for a 2011 GS coupe with MN6 tranny? I know folks like to suggest other brands..... but I prefer to stick with GM and want to be 100% sure of what I need before ordering or making a trip to the dealer. Thx.

I just looked at my owner's manual (2009, but same trans as yours), GM Manual Transmission Fluid, # 88861800.
Edit: Just looked at 2011 also, same.

Dexron III is being phased out as a product name. It is being renamed Manual Transmission Fluid and carries p/n 88861800 U.S
DO NOT use Dexron VI in place of manual transmission fluid in any manual transmissions or transfer cases that specify Dexron III, as a failure may result.

FWIW - I use Mobil 1 ATF in my 2005 MN6 with the Dexron III required Label. It improves the shifting IMHO and I recommend it.
According to ExxonMobil, Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is of the following quality level:

The warning not to use Dexron-VI in manual gearboxes is from a GM Preliminary Information Bulletin (PI) that you see pasted around.
The same information is related in a GM TechLink article from May 2009 (attached):
The same information is related in a GM TechLink article from May 2009 (attached):
"Any vehicle that previously used DEXRON-III for a manual transmission or transfer case should now use p/n 88861800 (88861801 in Canada) Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fluid... All licenses for DEXRON-III expired at the end of 2006 and will not be renewed. Fluids sold in the market after that date bearing claims such as 'suitable for use in DEXRON-III applications' or similar wording should be avoided, because ’DEXRON-III’ fluids are no longer checked and policed by GM and therefore may not be the originally tested and approved formulation.

Correct me if I am wrong ..... but I believe Dexron III is NOT synthetic. But it's OK to use a synthetic aftermarket brand like Mobile 1? Are the synchros OK with that ???

I'm using Amsoil Signature Series Multi-Vehicle Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid in my '09 M6. I've had great results with this fluid in many applications including this one.

Using Amsoil as well. Great product with smoother shifting than the GM fluid, especially when cold.

I think you're right. However, I doubt that anyone is using GM Part No. U.S. 12346241to lube their locks and hinges, which the Corvette engineers also tested with. I also doubt that many people are using the Goodyear Eagle F1 tires that the engineers tested with either. Collectively, the owner community has a lot more test time into the car by now than GM ever did. Tires, fluids, etc have also improved a lot over the past decade. I think there are a number of good or better fluid options that are compatible with the GM specification. But no harm in sticking with the GM brand if preferred - nothing to worry or wonder about going that route and there's something to be said for that.
