Default A6 owners (especially 2006) that have not had shift issues

I have a 2006 A6 with 46,000 miles on it. The car is still new to me and appears to have been well cared for. I know all Corvette years have potential gremlins and I have already experienced the HB problem , but fortunately for me , the Chevy dealer that sold me the car ate the cost on that. Recently, I have been reading about A6 shifter issues where the cable breaks, or the bushings wear out or the break lock gets stuck and you cannot shift it out of park. My question is, are these problems definitely going to happen to my car ? Are there any A6 (especially 2006) owners out there that have owned their cars for awhile and have some miles on their cars and have NOT experienced shifter problems?

Thanks,

Bob

76k+ without any shifter problems so far, but I keep the parts in my car just incase it does. I know it is not if, but when.

But on our cars it's the tried and true A4. The A6 was the first year for the Corvette in 2006. I remember which is why I made sure I got the 2005 Corvette rather than the 2006 which was the first year of the A6 automatic transmission.

Had my 11 GS since 2014, 34,000mi and no problems, YET, but after Turbo A-6 just had to do his I went and bought both packages of the Dorman bushings at AutoZone, $18 for both of them. I have a feeling its a crap shoot, also that heat may be a factor. Since I live in the hottest place on earth I figure my chances are pretty great they will fail so I'm ready

It's true that the A4 is pretty much bullet proof but the shifter cable still attaches the same way as every other year C6.

I have 142,500 miles on my base C6..Other than the normal maintenance all I have ever replaced was my radiator..and that was pushed to an extreme level..These cars are TUFF!! Mine is anyway..It overheated on the I-5 freeway heading into LA while I was on vacation HEAVY traffic, late afternoon rush hour..gauge kept going higher and higher finally got to Dodger Stadium parking window and the car had pretty much shut everything down by now and was limping 265 degrees..turned it off enjoyed the game(not)..worried about the extreme over heating..Left the Stadium, returned to car, fired it up..Zero issues.. nothing drove it back to Ahaheim Hills..next morning called my families local repair shop..They installed a factory Corvette radiator all new hoses cleaned and checked my AC smaller radiator.. and it was $1,100 total..Now. to your question about the shifter bushings..in the 142,500 original miles I have put on this vette..never even the slightest problem with the shifter cable or any bushings..ZERO..NADA..as for my HB..no wobbles no chirps..never ever!! This Corvette has been so awesome never letting me down..I mean to tell you I was scared when it over heated, but it fired back up like nothing was wrong..LS2 perfection..I'll have this car for a long long time to come..Sail on my friend!! Drive it!!

I have 47k on my 2006. just recently I've had an issue of not shifting out of park, but I usually just put pressure forward on the shifter when I push brake and usually it comes free. However, there was one time I couldn't get it but put more force when angry (LOL) and it came out of park.

That's what I've read. The transmissions are different, but they carried over the bushings and cable system from the A4 to the A6.

I've had plenty of other issues, just not that one. Bad waterpump, rear main seal, radiator, lifter, fusebox (headlight), HB, etc. Most were pretty easy to fix. Some were not fun but all doable at home.
I've never had an issue where it wouldn't shift in or out of park. I've broken down on the freeway because of overheating but other than that, never been stranded where I couldn't get the car home.
I really wouldn't worry about the shifter cable. However, if you do need to change it, it is going to suck replacing it because of the torque tube.

Mine isn't a 2006 as It is a new to me 2012. After reading these threads I am definitely going to get the parts to have on hand just in case. It is about to hit 41k miles and have nothing but great things to say about it up to this point. I still can't get over that they would use a little plastic bushing in a spot that gets a ton of heat and can be prone to breaking and basically make you stranded without a tow, or the parts. All the little quarks I have read of course impacts your thoughts. Like the fuel pump issue and every thing else. But every car has a few bad apples and hopefully that is the case as you can see so many have put on tons of miles on these cars with minimal issues.

I have a 2006 A6 with 47,000 miles and haven't had an issue. I've had the car for 9 years and have put 36,000 miles on it. I like having the control of what I gear I'm in, so I use the paddle shift most of the time.

New to the C6 scene and am doing as much research about them before I commit to buying. What is the "HB" I keep seeing?

HB=harmonic balancer. When buying, visually check the balancer (crank pulley) for wobble. A little seems to be normal. A lot is a problem. I put on an aftermarket balancer from ATI.

I've slowed down in the past several years, so my '08 DD is just short of 157,000 miles. Never a problem with the shifter, even though I've had the trans out 4 times. I did initially mis-adjust the linkage one time, but corrected it about a week later.

If heat was the root cause, my grommets should have failed years ago.
