Jerking into gear

Universal Joints / U Joints ? I have a Jeep Liberty and had to change U Joints. Shifted better when moving from Park to drive or reverse after the install. Had the local mechanic install them.
Not sure if this helps but a thought!

What is your idle speed? Only auto I've ever owned is my truck, on cold start it idles rather fast and will lunge if dropped into gear. I wait 30 seconds to idle down and it's fine.

Is this car new to you? If the car is not new to you and this is a new symptom, there may be a problem in the trans (computer, seals, line pressure, etc) that should be investigated. It probably isn't serious but it obviously bothers you so up to you how far you want to pursue.
Just as background, there was a problem with supposedly "some" '08's where internal seals were installed incorrectly which resulted in symptoms you describe when new. Many of us with cars outside the supposed "some" experienced the symptoms but couldn't get GM to fix them. You just wait for something to fail completely then fix.

Yes, new to me. Got it at 46k. I have a bumper to bumper for the next 50k miles, so whatever it is, I need it to fail before then.

FWIW, my 08' does the exact same thing. I've just learned to let off the brake right before it kicks and it slow rolls forward or backward. I thought a change of tranny filter and fluid would help, but it did nothing. At some distance point in the future I'll do a tune and hopefully it will get corrected then.

Might have the torque tube bushing (Corvette drive shaft) check or replaced, if that is not it try to come up with a reason of have them done before warranty runs out. It is a pretty labor intensive job. Also check CV axles.
