Does the noise go away when you increase rpms?

For me, I believe so.. that's why I think it may be loose baffle inside my Billy Boat Fusion muffler.

My car idles around 550-600 rpm. As soon as I raise idle speed to about 650 no sound at all. I only hear it when engine speed is at 600 at idle or when stopped. And even then it's barely noticable. That's why I have a hard time thinking it's the bearings. Bad bearing would get louder as you increase rpms. And bearing noise never goes away.

Good Morning Vette Lovers! Got the bad news from my dealer yesterday. Not only is the "death rattle" from my 08 C6 caused by the torque tube bearings, but apparently GM has dis-continued making / replacing them. Does anybody out there know a source for the bearings or a bearing rebuild kit? I found the bearings on eBay ($99 for one set. $79 for another). I'd prefer the kit because as I understand it the kit includes 3 bearings and the rubber couplers. The dealer is also looking for them but I'm sure they will take a thousand years to find them and charge me a fortune!!. Thanks...

As i found a GM dealer does NOT replace or do any work on the drive shaft......The dealer that i called gave me a price of $ 3,767 bucks for the complet torque tube plus labor at $160.00 per hr...... OP; How did the dealer diagnose it to be the torque tube?

I would still take it as another mentioned to a top Vette specialist for another opinion. He may also have knowledge of where the bearings could be purchased . Good luck. For those prices I would possibly trade in the car for a newer model.

That's a good question. Not sure how they determined it was the bearings. They had the car for a whole day and I'm sure they didn't drop the transaxle/rear suspension. But they did say if I found and brought them the bearings they would put them on. I bought an extended warranty that will cover it so cost is not really not an issue now. I still think if it was bearings the sound would t go away randomly.

If my noise is caused by a bearing then i will buy a new complete driveshaft and have it installed by some qualified mechanics at a performance shop..NEVER at the Stellaship

That's great advise. I never thought about just the drive shaft and bearings. I always assumed just bearings or the complete torque tube assembly. And I will talk to guys in my Corvette club to find a good auto mechanic instead of my local dealer. But I think I will get a second opinion. The rattle I hear and how it comes and goes and gets quiet at 650 rpm just doesn't sound like bearing failure to me. By the way, if I may ask what state you live in? You sound very knowledgable on Vettes.

Yes you can buy a loaded driveshaft ready to install. Why don't you take it to a good muffler shop and have it checked out...The dealer will screw you good every day of the week.I have LT headers with high flow cats so i drove it up on ramps a couple of weeks ago and used a 3 foot piece of holler metal tube and put it on the drivers side cat and it sounded good but the passenger side cat did not sound good at all....They are known to go bad after years and mileage I'm gonna take it to a muffler shop and have them cut off and weld two pieces of pipe in place and see if that helps......BTW: I'm from the Great State Of Texas. Note: I've had a couple of rattles in the past and it was because of the clamps on the X-pipe was not correctly installed after it got back from the dealer..(For Warranty Work).

First things first, I'm in Texas myself. Wichita Falls to be exact. Anyway before I spend a boatload of cash at the dealer im hoist g to look for a knowledgable mechanic to perform the work. But first I'll get another opinion because when I drove to work today, about 25 miles, complete silence. The only sound this morning was normal exhaust sounds. No rattling noise at all. So I'm going to get another opinion and bounce this issue off the Corvette Club members at our next meeting. Hope to stay in touch since we both are in Texas and love Vettes!
