For 99% of us, just use the recommended weight of any major synthetic oil and you'll be fine.

No, I just buy 5W-30 from Costco when it's on sale or Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 when it has the rebate.

Why would anyone risk using oil that isn't in spec for an engine?

Always fun to experiment with different viscosity of oils.

So far I've only used 5w30 Mobil 1 from Costco. I'm second owner and do not know what the previously owner used. had 39000 when I purchased it

Pennzoil is currently running their rebate if you buy two 5-quart jugs, you get a $22 gift card. Pennzoil has always done well for me with their rebates, unlike Mobil 1

So what is your final cost? Where is the gift card from?
I get six quarts of Mobil 1 for about $26 from Costco.
It goes on sale for this price more often than I need.

It's a $22 Shell gift card. It's $21.97x2 at Walmart, $43.94, minus $22= $21.94 (excluding tax) final cost for 66.7% more oil. Do this twice and you have enough for three oil changes, which would bring your total to around $44 for three oil changes compared to $78 for Costco.
YMMV, based on if you buy from Shell or not. I also get $0.10 off per gallon from T-Mobile and the normal $0.05 for the regular rewards card.
