Bad vibration/noise under hard acceleration?
Under hard acceleration in 1st, 2nd. and occasionally 3rd gear I am experiencing very loud exhaust note in side the car. There is a rattle/vibration of some sort that seems to be under the console near the dash. At times I feel a banging or tapping noise.Maybe even a popping sound.
At 6,000 rpms it almost feels the ignition is breaking up, like a misfire or something. It is clearly heard through the exhaust in the car. There are no codes being displayed.
I have removed the after market tunnel plate. Replaced the donut gaskets at the cat and h pipe transition. Have been all over the under side of the car. The exhaust piping seems to be very tight and not rattling or banging the tunnel plate.
Also when making a 90 deg left turn there was a clunking/banging noise
that felt as if something was hitting the floor. This was in second gear with very little throttle.
Does anyone have any serious ideas or have had a similar experience?
Dan

Hi Outnumbered. A few thoughts.
Is the vibration present when the car is at rest?
Car in neutral. Parking brake set. clutch out. Rev motor progressively to say 4K rpm. Vibration noted?
Repeat above with clutch in. Vibration noted?
If underway, does the vibration apear linked to engine rpm or to the speed of the car?
Just more grist for the diagnosis.

When it sounds like its cutting out or a misfire does it feel like your loosing power? or is it just the sound of it?
Mine was finally diagnoised with a broken motor mount and indeed the noise is gone.
The other discussion I had involve someone else with an aftermarket heatsheild, so I can't say it's absolutely the mount now that you mention you also have a shield.
Does the noise appear more making a turn, if so more left or right?

Mike: No clutch work.
Ranger:
No problems when free spinning in neutral or with the clutch in.
I seems to be related to rpm under a load. when the car is moving.
Gary:
I think it is really just the sound of it losing power. I don't really think it loses power.
It sounds like an intermittent exhaust leak at very high rpms. But it is fine if you push the clutch in and rev it up to 6k. It has to be under load.
As I said in the original post, occasionally it will do it at lower rpms when under load.
I had an after market tunnel shield on. At first the exhaust was clearly banging the shield. I cut holes into it for relief. It seems to have gotten better but not 100%.So I then reinstalled the factory shield. No floor banging. But still this awful exhaust note that sounds like a misfire.
The other noise I will call it, is when I made a left sharp turn lower rpms and speed but under load.
It is almost like I have two issues.
Thanks for you input Gentleman.
P.S. I don't want to jump the gun here. There was no issue prior to installing the thicker tunnel shield. Is is possible that if the exhaust was banging the tunnel shield due to the thicker size and the natural torquing of the engine that it could have been enough stress to actually break a motor mount?

Check the tightness of the two bolts that hold the rear of the center pipe. They use a 13mm socket. While under the car, look closely at the passenger side pipe that goes up and over the axle. It may be very close to hitting. Check the rear sway bar upper bolts. Good luck.

I have the same problem. In my case, it looks like the crossmember was bent while attempting to lift it. A muffler place said they'd cut out the bent section and re-weld a new section to eliminate the noise. I was trying to think of a way to bend it back myself.
