Default Shootout on the Airstrip in Sweden- Z06 Vs the World - Resaults and now with Pic's

LINK: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=97994

Well, once again it was time for the Z06 to meet the world in totally unscientific races.......All races was made for pure fun and actually proves nothing....but could still indicate something!!

This year the competition was really tough. The Z06 was competing with Mercedes SLR, Porsche Carrera CGT, RUF Porsche Rt12, Porsche GT2, Kellners M6 among others.

There were lots of cars this year, about 40 different. So I only got to race the SLR, CGT, GT2 and Kellners M6......the strip was approximately 1600 meter long which made some of the cars doing speeds over 300 km/h.

This year I remembered to start the races in 1st gear which made a huge difference off cause. But as the speeds got close to 300 km/h I had to go into 5th gear.....that gave me problems during the two first races (as you will see below).....Changing gear into 5th at speeds of 250/260 km/h in a race - where it has to be done very quickly - was difficult and in two races I hit the reverse instead!!! The reverse is positioned in a bad place as it is quite easy to miss 5th and hit it instead....and as all the races was between very fast cars there was no room for mistakes....

My car is stock except for Halltech Killer Bee and tune......These small changes proved well worth it's price......the car is much faster and the throttle much more responsive.......I'd like to recommend these products and send my thanks to Jim!!!!

Now the results.......

Z06 Vs. SLR; Before this race the SLR had slaughtered all it's competition including an SL65.....So I was pretty sure the same would happen to me....But no....to my big surprise the Z06 was faster than the SLR up to 250/260 km when I had to go into 5th gear.......And missed......so I lost the race....but only the last 100 meters or so due to my own fault....

Kelllners M6: This M6 is tuned to 570 Hp by Kellners in Germany. The driver was an American living in Germany calling himself Ruzzrams on the Internet. This M6 is really fast and has a very loud and raw sound...In the first race against the M6 I did the same driver error as above so we decided to go for a rerun.....In the rerun I drove almost perfect except for hitting the rev limiter once which actually didn't matter much....I managed to win over the M6.....But I could notice how he gained on me as I went into 5th gear........had we gone further and in higher speeds I think he would be faster than the Z06.

Porsche GT2: Almost the same race as against the Kellners M6. I was clearly faster than the GT2 until 5th gear and I did beat him. But as I went into 5th he started to gain on me. When the new GT2 comes I think it will be a very tough competitor for the Z06.

Porsche Carrera GT: This car sounds and looks fantastic! I thought it would be unbeatable for the Z06.....but not really as it would show....The Z06 was faster up to +200 km/h when the CGT driver missed a gear and fell back......so with that the race was over.....But I have to admit that I was really amazed by the fact that the Z06 could take this car....sure.....had we gone for a full race and/or +300 km/h I'm sure he would have beaten me without any problems.....but still....up to +200 km/h...the Z06 with only KB and tune was able to outrun this amazing $400.000 car......

The fastest car of the day was without doubt the RUF 996 Rt12....No one could even threaten this car.....it had been dynoed to 725 Hp (DIN) and made the run this day with a top speed of 315 km/h.....The rest of us made top speeds of approximately 290-295 km/h......The CGT made one run finishing in 300 km/h....

Pictures and videos will soon be available as there was lots of photographers on the Air strip.....Very fun event....which will stir up the pot on some Internet forums during the next months.....

Good post. Very interesting results. I've never thought about having to shift 4th to 5th quickly. I can see how that good have bad results. Do you remember what the speed was at the top of 4th?

Again good post

You said you lost to SLR in the last 100 meters. About how many car lenths if you remember? Were was he at before your missed shift? Rear bumper, Door etc? One more question, what does your car dyno?
Thanks.

Oh and excellant runs!!

Good Job!

Thanks.....according to my HUD I reach a top speed of about 250/260 km/h in 4th........Should add that Jim raised my rev limiter to 7.300 rpm if I remember correctly.

Trawicked: You said you lost to SLR in the last 100 meters. About how many car lenths if you remember? Were was he at before your missed shift? Rear bumper, Door etc? One more question, what does your car dyno?
I should add that the 100 meters is an estimation.....but it was in the very end after I missed the gear shift.....Before that I guess he was about a car behind me....It's hard to tell when doing very high speeds and concentrating on the gear shifts....I hope there will be a video from this race.....if so you would also probably be able to hear me scream from frustration when missing the gear shift..... Ohhhh...Sorry, but I haven't dynoed the car yet....but according to Jim I should have about 550 Hp under the hood....I hope he will step in and give you more facts.....His set up is just wonderful....

And yes......shifting quickly to 5th is a pain.....don't know why GM decided to place the reverse so close to the 5 gear....would be much better if it was placed near 1st gear.....

Videos and pictures would be up soon....now it's rather late at night in Sweden....so I guess tomorrow our time....

Sure I did......I use my Z06 for racing.....no good at polishing..

GaryZ06: Sure I would like to practise....but there are so few occasions when you get the chance to do races over 250/260 km/h.....and then having to shift super fast into 5th........so any advice would be appreciated...

What I did to learn to shift faster was, sit in driveway with the engine off & emergency brake up. And just practice the mechanics of a perfect shift. Ended up working pretty good.

Yes.....that is a very good way to practise.....but the problem - for me - is the R being placed next to the 5th gear.....when shifting as quick as you can it's easy to miss by just a little....and you misses the 5th and hit the R instead.....which makes you loose revs and speed....therefor also loosing the race.........
