hi dude
Here is a suggestion for You
If your fuel gauge is giving you wacky readings, it is more than likely the fuel sender (#110555). But how do you know for sure? Here is a way to test the fuel gauge to make sure it is not the culprit:
Open the trunk and remove the carpet and Trunk Inspection Cover #105168.
Locate the fuel sender. There are three connectors on top of the fuel sender. Start with the plastic connector plugged in.
1. Test 1:
a. Jumper the connectors on top of the fuel sender that correspond to the green wire w/black stripe and the black ground.
b. Turn on the ignition.
c. The fuel gauge should read empty.

Happened twice to me yesterday afternoon. The Fuel level display dropped to empty and I got the "Service Fuel System" message along with the "Low Fuel" message. I normally hit Costco for gas... Safeway too.
06 Z06 with 43k on the clock... good thing I renewed my GMPP one last time. Goes in on Tuesday for the fix, and I won't settle for a reflash.
Other than that miles of smiles every time I drive... thumbs up from a ton of regular car owners ;D

You might have deposits building up on your fuel level sensors, I don't think Costco or Safeway sell top tier gasoline. If the dealer doesn't fix the problem try a bottle of Techron, then use a top tier fuel. If you Google "Top Tier Fuels" you'll find a list of brands that are rated top tier, having sufficient detergents to meet GM recommendations. You'll especially want to stick with top tier fuel after the GMPP expires.

Yep, Costco and Safeway don't cut it. I'm almost exclusively using QuickTrip (QT) now, plus it's a good price. Still, when my tank reaches 1/4 I get the low fuel message, and the tank gauge reads empty. It keeps going back and forth between that, and normal readings. Techron hasn't helped.

Thanks ZL-1 ... will do. I don't really care how much gas costs ~ it has always been about convenience. So top tier is from now on.

Had issue a couple of times.
Techron + a tank of Top Tier gas clears it up for me.
I try to stick to these, but sometimes have to use others for availability.
TOP TIER Gasoline Retailers:
USA Canada
76 Stations Chevron Canada
Aloha Petroleum Esso
BP Petro-Canada
Chevron Shell Canada
Conoco

is it always the passenger sender that fails?
is the passenger side the culprit when the first half the tank works, but at half tank it bombs to e with the code?
i read where a guy bypassed the passenger side, which would agree with what Meir David posted.
but i just want to know if it takes an average of them both (where bypassing would fix for full range) or if it adds them together for a total.
also not sure how the tanks work together. do they both deplete evenly under normal operation, or does the passenger tank go empty, then it starts using the driver tank?

It was the passenger side sensor that had failed. Watched the bottom video and I have 2 comments:
1. looks like when the "fingers" go, it is broken
2. Really glad the dealership could diagnose and fix it. Cost $899 - me $100 deductible. Took about 24 hours from drop off to pick up.
Had a new windshield installed while it was done.

I drive mine at least 4 times a week... about 7500 miles a year. I think it is a combination of age, a fragile part - possibly not made with a very robust material (the metal fingers) and the various types of gas that we use that are not top tier... it is a recipe for not if, but when it will happen.
I always fill up at a quarter tank, due to AZ heat ... the gas is the cooling mechanism for the working parts in the tank(s).

to follow up my posts.
my passenger fuel sensor 'fingers' were indeed worn down to where they were not touching the resistor board. they looked just like the guys in the vid above at 1:19
i could have bent them down to touch again, but i happened to have another arm from the gas tank of my race car build. i didnt replace the board itself, it looked fine.
problem solved.
definitely nothing techron had a shot of fixing despite my previous owners well wishes.

My passenger side sensor went last week and had it replaced. It would only act up when filled to full. I could fill to 16 gallons or so and it would act fine. We tested it out of the tank and it would go to "Lo" on the meter at or near the full position of 40 ohms. Going to replace the driver side soon when I replace the pump.
