Excellent Instructions
Just in time for my new APSIS D-shaped wheel. Should be here any day now. Part smooth leather; part perforated leather w/ red stiching. Can't wait !
Many thanks,
Matthew

Dammit...I see a new credit card charge in my future. Based on these excellent instructions, I have no worries about ordering one from DSV and doing the work.
Great write up.

Here's a suggestion I learned from an old timer about 40 years ago if you don't have a wheel puller. Loosen the steering wheel nut so there is play between the wheel and the nut - leave the nut on by a couple of threads. Then pull the wheel back towards you, with pressure on the left, then the right, and back and forth.
Unless the wheel is really stuck on, the wheel will pop off against the nut almost every time. I can't remember the last time I needed a wheel puller for pulling a steering wheel. Just remember to leave the nut on, or you won't like what happens.

You guys and gals can go direct thru DSVettes..Gerardo is the man/owner. Lino is the sales guy. This company rocks in customer service. Gerardo is good at what he does..makes sweet leather dress up producst for our Vettes.

Looking at the pic for the wires to the air bag they seem to be the same, I know the new bags have dual stages, basically high speed and low speed, is it possible to cross up the wiring when reconnecting and the computer recognizes it's hooked up wrong when it runs it check?

Hey "Dreamin"...got a question for you regarding the spoke covers. I've got two brand new color matched spoke covers that I just received, however, they are totally smooth on the rear side and nothing obvious that attaches them to the steering wheel itself. From your pictures, it appears they are held in place with a screw to a bracket type arrangement. I'm guessing that the covers are glued onto the bracket? These new ones having nothing on them that will attach to anything. Please tell me what you saw on yours. I need to know before I go to do this job.

The cover is a complicated piece of plastic... it's curved, with a piece sticking out with a bolt hole, where it attaches to the steering wheel.
Pic 3a show the bolt (where the wrench is) going through the cover.
Pic 3b shows the cover flipped over (under and below the red circle)... that whole thing is the factory piece.
If you have just a simple curved piece, i don't think the steering wheel has to come apart... that piece snaps in and you epoxy/glue it onto the factory covers... check with the vendor.

Yeah, mine is just the simple curved piece from the vendor. I'm guessing that they intended for it to be glued onto the top of the original one. Mine's got the buttons therefore they'll be recessed a long ways if I glue it on top..hmmm. My buttons are nearly flush as it is standard. Thanks for the answer.

DSVettes now does custom Alcantara and leather wrap D shaped steering wheels.
Give Gerry a call.

Thanks for this write-up, made my install go quickly and easily.
Used the autozone puller, no LOUD pop, but came right off.
Only thing in the writeup, don't you mean ToRX bolts instead of HEX bolts the few times you mention them?
Thanks again for doing this!! You should post this in the General / Tech sections of the C6 area too IMHO.

I used this to swap out my wheel and it was most useful. Thanks.
I would point out another correction that could be made. The tool list at the start says a 22mm socket but the instruction when it comes time to actually use it says a 21mm socket (which is correct if I remember correctly.)
I used a standard two-legged, 3" gear puller. Made a very nice pop.

But I'm pretty sure i used a Hex socket, not a Torx socket:

Dreamin,
Thanks for a great write-up. I'm heading out to the garage to swap out the stock covers for painted covers I picked up at Carlisle last Saturday.

Did you get your airbag light issue resolved? If so I would like to hear how. I’ve got the same problem after working on the horn / cancel cam on my C5.
Everything is good. I triple checked. I even disconnected and reconnected the airbag a second time. Something must be different. They probably fault the computer if the airbag is disconnected for safety reasons. I don't see anyway that I blew this up, so I'm sure it's something simple. Thanks for the great DIY. Your directions and pictures saved me a bunch of time.
