[Z06] DIY - Steering Wheel Replacement (or side-spoke cover replacement)

Air bag Light
So the directions were perfect. Took less than an hour. Only issue I have now is that the airbag light stays on. I know I disconnected ground and let it sit before disassembly. No issue with airbag connectors and no issues putting everything back. I reconnected the negative terminal, waited a few minutes and started the car up. Airbag light stayed on. Let the car run, took it for a quick drive, hoping it just needed to reset and it still stayed on. Anyone know if the dealer just needs to reset the computer?

tommy9052,
I'd just recommend taking it to the dealership and having them reset the airbag light. Also, might want to have them take a quick peak to make sure something isn't actually wrong with the airbag.

Did you ever get the air bag light switch off ? Just curious I want to do mine tonight but don't want an issue with the light staying on. if I have to bring it to the dealer to reset the light I'll just have the dealer put the wheel in to begin with. Thank you for your time. Tommy

another great post by dreamin, very helpful during my SW swap. only thing i will add is 2009 and up went to torx screws instead of allen heads, needed to pick up a size 20 and 30 for this job. turning the wheel while pulling on it got it loose. thanks again.

Wow! Thanks for taking the time and energy to post the photos and step by step instructions! I don't think I would ever do it myself, but I appreciate your effort.

Thank you so much for taking all the time you did to do this write up! I just got done putting my new DSVettes wheel on and although had a similar problem with the generic wheel puller, I got it done all by myself.
Thanks from a mildly mechanically challenged girl! You made it simple enough even I could do it!!

I'll go out on a limb and say that 100% of time a steering wheel puller is not necessary. Just loosen the center nut but don't remove it, if the wheel won't pull straight off, just gently **** from side to side until it comes right off.
One of the few mods I think are absolutely necessary for pre-'12 Corvettes...

Super DIY
Thanks Dreamin. I was able to get my old wheel off and a new one installed in under an hour and thirty min. Thanks for the brillant write up. It made this update a breeze.

Just did this mod. Took about 30 minutes. Everything went great except I ended up having my airbag light on the dash light up. I don't understand what I could have possibly done wrong. There are only two connectors for the airbag. One is pink, one is white. I plugged them both in and they clicked in place. They are not loose, they do not pull out.
The only thing I didn't do was replace the little yellow pieces on the airbag connectors. They would not fit in when I tried to reinstall them, and they started to bend when I forced them in, so I just left them off. Could this cause the airbag light to turn on?See picture below:
edit: It is those yellow clips. I have to go dig through my trash to look for them now. See this thread for reference: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-z...leshoot-2.html

I successfully and rather easily installed a 2012 steering wheel with red stitching on my 2008 C6. I love it! A definite upgrade from the stock wheel. The process took me about an hour and a half, though I'm pretty sure I could do it in 20 minutes now, given the chance. Super easy, thanks to these detailed installation instructions. Thank you so much, OP!
P.S. I rented a steering wheel puller, though I didn't end up using it. As others have stated, just loosen the main nut a few threads and give the steering wheel a few firm jiggles from each side. Eventually, I heard a "pop" and the wheel was loose. ... I was expecting the pop to be much louder, for some reason!

Great thread! Swapped out the stock wheel on my 2008 for a 2012 suede one with blue stitching today, no puller needed. So much easier then my C5 was!

In my over 50 years of working on cars, I've yet to come across a steering wheel that needed a puller. Just back off the nut, then pull and wiggle - it will come loose. Just don't take off the nut first or you won't be happy with the results!
All you need is a flat ended 1/8" or 5/32" punch and a 21mm socket. It's a simple job you can do in a few minutes.
As others have found, this is a nice addition to the interior of your Vette.
