[Z06] auto rear hatch

BEZ06, I got your PM and will donate that piece of cable to the cause. I would donate the carpet but I have the whole set for sale and/or may need to save it for my Mod on the 08 when the time comes even though I will have to locate the parts again.
Also for those that asked you will most likely have to remove the rear fascia to easily get the mounting position and nuts.
If you need any pics or measurements from the donor car let me know.
Robert

For those that missed it in one of my above posts, Robert (RLSebring) is parting out a C6 coupe and I bought the parts you see in my pictures from him. Now he's coming through with the cable, and that's very much appreciated.
I'm not worried about the trim piece right now. I think I'll go for a new 2009 Z06 piece when the 2009 stuff becomes readily available from forum vendor Gene Culley.
Thanks again for all the stuff!

I removed the cable this morning and boxed it up. The cable is part of the lock mechanism so I included the entire piece, cable, plate with key lock, key, and push button and pig tail for the push button.
Please be very careful when you open the box. The cable is coiled up and make try to pop out like the snake in the can.
The carpet piece will not work. I thought the carpet had the roof holders mounted it the carpet but they are mounted in the rear tub will holes in the carpet to protrude through.
Good Luck

I think the '09 Z06 will use the exact same latch that the regular C6 coupe has used up until now. I'm almost certain that if you get an '09 latch you'll be getting the same thing you see in my pictures - i.e., you'll still need to drill the holes to mount it in the hatch and you'll still need to figure out how to wire it up.
Most of this should be fairly easy, but the wiring may be kind of tricky.

Take a look at this picture, and it shows what I got from Robert (forum member RLSebring):
You can see that I got the connectors and a pigtail of the wiring harness. I think this is all I'm going to need to hook everything up.
In the picture below I have separated the wires:
The wires in the bottom bundle can all just be disconnected from the Z06 latch and connected right up to the pull down latch.
The bundle on the top will have to be spliced into the Z06 wires - or I'll probably try to make an adapter, as forum member leres has suggested.
All of the colors of wires in that picture above are all there in the Z06 latch area - it's just that the main connector to the latch is different and doesn't include all those wires because a couple of them hook up differently to a second connector on the Z06.
As leres has mentioned, there seems to be a difference in the 2 cars in that one has a "release relay" that I think is up in the area under the passenger kick panel, and the other seems to have that relay incorporated into the latch and just has a "release fuse" up in the fuse panel under the passenger footwell.
Leres has mentioned that we may have to fabricate a jumper for the relay in the Z06 so that the proper signals get sent to the BCM when the pull down latch is installed.
So.....I think I've got all the wiring harness I need, and I imagine that when/if I get this thing installed and working properly that the best way to do this mod would indeed be to get the parts with the connectors and pigtail wires from a C6 that is being parted out rather than buying new parts.
I sure don't want to try to install a new section of harness into the passenger footwell area and back to the latch. I don't think that's necessary as all the proper colored wires are back there - we just need to figure out how to hook them up and work around the "relay" issue.

I DID IT!!!! And it WORKS!!!!!!!!
I spent all afternoon working on installing the pull down latch, took a couple hours off to take the wife out to dinner and stop by AutoZone to pick up an in-line fuse, came home and got everything pretty well finished up by 10:00PM.
And ----- IT WORKS!!!!
Here's what I was trying to do:
And here's an after video showing (well....sort of - it's kinda dark at 10:00 at night!!!)
I've still got several things to do: 1) I need to adjust the latch position down just slightly to get a little bit tighter closing; 2) I'm waiting for the key lock cylinder from Robert (forum member RLSebring) so I can install that so I have the emergency manual release using the key; and 3) I need to order a 2009 Z06 trim piece to cover up the latch and the rear of the hatch compartment.
Below is a picture of the fuse and relay block in the passenger footwell. If you can't read the text, essentially it says that I removed both the fuse in the upper right and the relay in the lower left of the picture:
Here's a jumper wire I made to connect the C9 and D9 terminals on the relay block after I removed the relay:
Here's the jumper wire installed and ready to put the covers back on and that is all I did up there in the passenger footwell area:
I found out these things below were on the backside of the hatch compartment tub. I had to pry them loose and remount them for the longer pull down latch support. There turned out that the top holes were already there, so it didn't take much measuring at all - just to drill the bottom hole 5-1/2 inches below the top hole. Those reinforcing strips were glued and riveted on, but I pried them loose and used bolts to fasten them to the new locations:
Here's a picture of the auto pull down latch all mounted up. I ended up just splicing the wires to each other - it was very simple to just match up all the colors. Well.....except there was no Red-White wire in the Z06 wiring harness. In the C6 coupe the Red-White hot +12 volt wire comes from that 15 amp fuse. Rather than splice into that wire and run 10 feet of wire from the passenger footwell and snake it all the way back to the rear of the hatch, I just ran a wire from the positive terminal of the battery and spliced it into the Red-White wire in the wire bundle that connects to the auto pull down latch. I also put the 15 amp in-line fuse that I bought at AutoZone in the wire to protect that circuit:
Here it is pretty well cleaned up - all I need is the trim piece to cover it all up:
It works great!!! It opens with the button on the instrument panel, the button over the license plate, and the hatch open button on the Fob. If the engine is running I get the "Hatch Ajar" message. So.....I think everything is hooked up properly so far - just the key lock cylinder and manual release cable to go.

And did you have to remove the rear fender in order to do all that? Or did you just remove the rear lights to get access to the backside of the tub?

Wow finally!!! I have been hoping for years that someone will do this since I didn't have the guts or time to tear up my baby. BEZ06 thanks so much for paving the way into this converstion. I took a lot of heat when I proposed this idea more than a year ago, and I bet many of those guys who were skeptical are now keeping a close watch on this thread.
I only have one request from you, if not to much to ask. Can you please make a parts list of all the C6 parts that you needed to buy, with a corresponding picture of that part. Then the step by step process. I'm not afraid of splicing and running wires, so I'd like to do this as my personal project.
Thanks in advance.

Good work!
I have little idea of what the lock cylinder looks like (and I can't find it in the manual) but is there any chance you can swap some part of your old Z06 cylinder into the the one that came from the coupe? Usually they can be disassembled for rekeying.

I think that the absolute best way to do this is with used parts from a car getting parted out. RLSebring is parting out a car and generously gave me a good deal on the parts for $165, but that doesn't include the trim piece. I'll have about $300 in it by the time I get that.
If you get new parts, the latch and latch support would be about $280 new. You also would need a new striker that I think is about $20. None of the GM parts websites have any 2009 parts yet, but I expect that the 2009 Z06 trim piece will be $120 or so. All those prices are forum discount prices. You'll also need connector and the terminals to build yourself the connector to hook up the wires to the latch - that may not be too expensive (probably 20 or 30 bucks), but would be a real PITA. I have no idea what the key lock and manual release cable costs, but I bet in the neighborhood of $150. You may even have to buy some bolts that connect the latch to the latch support and some other incidental hardware. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND USED PARTS!!!
So.....with new parts I think you're talking $600 or more.
Without question the best way to do this is with used parts from an accident car or one being turned into a race car. You can get the latch support and latch as one unit and you should be able to get a foot or 15 inches of wiring harness pigtail with the connector already wired up so that it is MUCH easier to do the wiring. Once I got the latch mounted it took me about 5 minutes to clamp wire-tap splice clips on the wires to connect all the wires of the same color together. The only other wiring I did was the jumper wire in the relay block and the wire from the battery with a fuse in it.
I think anybody parting out a car should be happy to get $150 or $200 for all the hardware you need. You can use a C6 trim piece but it will have a couple holes in it where the brackets for mounting the top in the hatch compartment stick through, and if you don't care about them then that piece will probably be available cheaper than a new 2009 Z06 piece will cost. Like in my case, I'm sure you should be able to do it for $300 or so with used parts.
There are a couple of salvage companies that are vendors on the forum and they should have parts from accident vehicles. Also, check with forum vendors Katech and Phoenix because they are always building race cars and should be happy to get something for these parts.

So there were two of these things on the backside? And if I understand you correct, there is no need pulling them off? Just drill the lower holes through the tube AND the metal things?
And did you have to remove the rear fender in order to do all that? Or did you just remove the rear lights to get access to the backside of the tub?
Ryan

You need to pry them loose. They are riveted in - I took a pair of channel locks and chewed the rivet loose from the hatch side, then took a screwdriver and reached in a tail light hole to pry them loose. Here's a picture of one of them leaning against the aft wall of the hatch compartment:
You only have to drill holes through the tub - very soft, quick, and easy. When I relocated those reinforcing mounting strips I just used bolts.
I was able to do everything so far by removing the inner tail light on each side and reaching in a feeling around. It was a PITA (Pain In The Arms) and my forearms are scratched and bruised, but I sure didn't want to remove the rear fascia. When I get to trying to replace the key lock I don't know if I'm going to be able to do it without taking off the rear fascia, but I'll let you know.

Take a look at my album with a bunch of pictures of the parts:

The only parts I got were this:
and this:
I'm also going to receive the key lock and manual release cable, which it turns out is different between the 2 latches.
In the top picture above, you can see that I got a nice hunk of wiring harness pigtail that is all hooked up to the connector that is attached to the latch. The unit in the picture is actually 2 items: the latch; and the latch support. If you bought new ones they would come separated, and you might need to buy the appropriate bolts to connect them together.
I think that you REALLY want to get a used one where the latch and latch support are one unit and you have a nice pigtail of wires. It just took me a couple of minutes to splice like color wires together with splice clips. The connector for this latch is different from the one in the Z06 and and if you ordered the connector and the metal terminals from Delphi, Mouser, or some other electrical parts supply house you'll spend a bunch of time trying to figure out which color wire goes to which block in the connector and soldering terminals on the end of wires and installing them into the connector. Thanks for the info in your previous posts about the wiring - it really helped me to understand what I was looking at in the schematics and pictures in the service manual, and how to tackle the relay issue.
BTW the Z06 latch weighed in at about 3-1/2 pounds, and the pull down latch was about 6-1/2 pounds. So.....there was about a 3 pound weight saving by not making this feature available on the Z06.
I'm hoping I can swap out the cylinder so that I can use my old key so I'll only need one key and use the same one for the console/glove box/rear hatch.
I'll let you know how it goes. I'm heading from Daytona down to South Florida Tuesday to meet up with some old Harley buddies for the Key West Poker Run, so I won't get to do the key lock part of the project for another week or 10 days.
So far I'm real pleased with the results - I just hope the key lock part is doable without taking off the rear fascia.

You should be able to change the lock with out taking the rear fascia off. It will be tight and the hardest part will be getting that rubber boot situated thru the rear tub. The cable is made into the lock cyclinder housing so if you ever break the cable you'll most likely have to buy the assembly.
With this new relavation in modding the pull down I will start collecting rear latch assemblies from the C6 coupes that I come across and will post the parts on here so everybody keep turn in.
Nice work!!
BTW If you use standard coupe carpet get the roof support and mounting bracket with it. The supports are not obstrusive at all and would look normal for the most part in lieu of buying the 09 part.

Sweet!!! I know it wasn't easy but it sure sounded easy. Can I have my parts back now . I know it's going to cost me more to locate the parts than what I sold them for but I gotta do it to mine now.

Thanks very much for the help getting the parts - I got the key lock and cable today and finished it up. In the light of day this morning I saw that the hatch wasn't pulling down far enough, so I moved the latch assembly down about a 1/4 inch and adjusted the shims (GM calls them "striker spacers") and got the hatch closing perfect. Here's a video of the final product:
Here's a link to my photobucket album with a bunch of pictures:
http://s68.photobucket.com/albums/i1...0down%20latch/
Here's a picture of the lock and cable you sent for the auto pull down latch on the bottom, and my original Z06 lock/cable on the top:
I drilled out the rivets, popped that circlip off, and swapped out the cylinder so I can use my original key:
I replaced the rivets with bolts, both to hold the lock to that thin plate, and also to hold the plate in the rear fascia.
I temporarily installed the trim from my 2005 coupe. I ordered a 2009 Z06 piece this morning from Parts Bob at Fichtner and it won't have the holes in it.
I was able to do the whole thing just by reaching through the tail light holes. My forearms are bruised and sore, but I didn't want to screw with taking off the fascia.
If you're doing this mod to your Z06 and have any questions, just give me a holler!!!

P.S. Just for the record, how much weight do you think was added to the vehicle after everything is said and done? I think this will spark a new heated discussion about this conversion. Not trying to cause trouble, but rather would like to put an end to this controversial decision by GM.

Thanks Bob! One last question, with the 09 Z06 rear cover that you ordered, what is the total cost for this entire project? Thanks to you, I think its not too far down the road when shops start to do this conversion, but I'm sure they'll charge an arm a leg, and your first born child to do this using new parts.
Thanks again.
John
P.S. Just for the record, how much weight do you think was added to the vehicle after everything is said and done? I think this will spark a new heated discussion about this conversion. Not trying to cause trouble, but rather would like to put an end to this controversial decision by GM.
Thanks again.

I'll have a total of about $300 in it with the used latch and the new trim piece. I think to do it all with new parts would cost around $500.
I spent a lot of time researching the service manual and looking at schematics a diagrams of the fuse and relay blocks.
I probably spent about 6 hours out working on the car yesterday, then when the key lock/cable arrived today I spent about another 4 hours on it. A lot of that time was figuring out how I was going to attack things - it's one of those projects that to do again would probably take me a total of 3 or 4 hours, but I spent much more than that figuring things out.
I weighed the latches: the original manual Z06 latch weighed about 3-1/2 pounds; the auto pull down unit was about 6-1/2 pounds.
So....there was about a 3 pound weight savings for the Z06 by not making this feature available.
Personally, I'm real happy to add 3 pounds to get this capability!!

Bob,
That was incredible! I knew someone here could make this a reality. I don't have the knowhow or tools or general knowledge to do that to my 08 z06.
Very well done and you deserve some kudos for your time and effort. Enjoy!

I think that the absolute best way to do this is with used parts from a car getting parted out. RLSebring is parting out a car and generously gave me a good deal on the parts for $165, but that doesn't include the trim piece. I'll have about $300 in it by the time I get that.
If anybody has the parts for sale I would start right off in doing the conversion and also post my experiences.
