Who has used Hoosier R6's drag racing?
If you have used these tires what pressures were you running? What was your launch rpm?
I used my set for the first time but just couldn't get off the line due to spinning. It was the first time that i didn't spin at the top of first ever in my car though.

I tried them in Houston last year at the TX2K8 event. I used them on Thursday at TWS for a day of road racing. Loved them on the road course. Used them Saturday on the drag strip. HATED them. I think the sidewall is too stiff - a drag radial would work much better. I experimented with different tire pressures and did some burnouts. Nothing seemed to help.

I tried mine, didn't work for me either. No way to launch them because of the stiff sidewalls. They would take full power AFTER the launch where with the GY RF's I spun pretty bad all the way in first. (Poor track prep as much as anything.) I ran them at 24 PSI and in 2 pound increments all the way to 30, seemed best at 24.

theres are my excact points.. just couldn't launch at all. only had 1 pass under a 2.0 60 ft and it was a 1.98. all other passes were in the 2.0 to 2.1 range. After i got out the hole it would hold all the power where normally my car would break loose top of first and beginning of 2nd. had 1/4 mile traps of 129 all day, just wish i could have got out of the hole. Best 1/4 was 11.36... also had a couple 11.40's.

I had a similar experience. It wasn't on R6's though, it was on a set of Toyo R888's.
I had used them at Pocono during the day for an HPDE and then want direct to Island Raceway that evening for some drag racing. My times on the R-rated tires went down by about 1/2 second over my GY run flats a few weeks earlier.
Just could not get them to hook up once the get cold and even a few seconds in the burn out box didn't seem to get them sticky.

Road racing requires lateral grip where drag racing requires linear grip, hence the super stiff sidewalls in the R6. Drag radials have thin side walls allowing you to use lower air pressures to increase grip.

opinions please.
Would Pilot Sport CUPS hook up any better in a straight line than PS2s or the new PS2ZPs?
I'm thinking about putting a pair of Cup tires on the rear just so I don't spin so much on the street and hoped that maybe they'd even help a bit at the drag strip???
Cheers, Paul.

I also tried R6s on the drag strip. I think my 2.0-2.3 60fts speak for themselves.

Yeah i bought them because someone on here said that as long as you really heat them up that they cut consistent 1.6's... well guess you can't believe everything you read!

The reason R6's wont' work for drag racing is because they are made for road racing. R6's are the worse thing you could use at the strip.

I know this thread is several years old but I thought I'd reply in case anyone did a search. I was running an extremely dried out set of Viper take-off 335/35/17 from the 90s that I simply would not get traction even in 3rd with a measly 470rwhp. I hopped on Craigslist and bought a set of $50 per tire Hoosier R6 315/35/17 and they are date marked 2008 (lol). Went to the track on Sunday and aired them down to 16psi, did a sold 6-8 second burnout, and slipped the clutch basically off idle. Once I got going they hooked OK in 1st and totally fine on the 1-2 shift. I was able to cut a handful of 1.90's and 1.91's but nothing better than that. In conclusion, I think R6's are marginally better than street tires, and I would suspect a fresh high end regular radial would be about the same. I just didn't want to spend $500 on drag radials for the very few times I'd 1/4 mile the car.

C5Z front wheels with Hoosier 275/40-17 drag radials.
Best setup I've found is C5Z front wheels with Hoosier275/40-17 drag radials. MT drag radials work fine also, but they are a few pounds heavier.
