Default Time to freshen it up - GM Stage 3

After putting 20,000 miles on my 427 build, I decided it was time to tear it down and freshen it up. Glad I did because the caddy lifters were starting to come apart.

The car is mostly going to be dedicated for the track, so I upped the cam from the Katech Torquer to the GM Stage 3 grind and compression has been raised from 10.4:1 to 12:1. Last numbers from the previous build were 530 HP and 498 TQ to the wheels.

So to get the compression we decked the block .005" and the heads .050".

Here is the cam. - Thanks for the influence Short Throw. =)

Cam installed with Katech C5R chain. No more double roller to worry about.

I hate filing rings...

Pistons installed...

Everything torqued...

New clutch...

A little something for my buddy RC45.

Now if UPS would show up with the head gaskets, ATI under
drive and shorter pushrods, I could hear it purr. =)

Nice... bring it on old man - I be ready for you

BTW, can you post up some photos of the Caddy Lifters... I still can't believe what they looked like.

What fuel will you be tuning it on?

You will not be disappointed. Remember to utilize the higher RPM now!

Great pics!

Any other mods to balance out your soon to be new found power?

Milling that much, what kind of valve clearance do you have?

That combo is good for 650hp.

Will be tuning on VP C10 "100 Octane".

Hopefully I haven't lost all of my low-end since I increased the compression, but I know it won't have the grunt of the Torquer.

As far as the clutch, I looked at them all. The Textralia twin was backordered, so I went with the single. It worked pretty well for the last 20K miles. I am way over budget already.

Other mods include Hardbar Penske's, CCW wheels and Hoosier R6 and A6 combos. Soon as the tune is complete, I am putting a partial cage in it.

I don't think you will be unhappy with any lower torque issues. I think you will be quite pleased how it will pull continually!

The extra compression will make up the torque lost from going from the Torquer cam to the Stage 3 cam. The last 12:1 Stage 3 cam LS7 we did made 569 ft-lbs.

Correction on the fuel... Will be running VP Motorsport 109

Motor Octane 101
Research Octane: 109
R+M/2: 105

At 9.75 a gallon, can I mix this partially with pump gas and be safe to keep the cost down a little?

Brakes are next. I am running stock calipers with 2 piece StopTechs and Hawk pads and Motul fluid.

As long as you have a homogeneous mixture of 60% 105 octane and 40% 93 octane (R+M/2) that would put you at 100 octane and that would be good. I'm not an expert on mixing fuels but I think that is how it works. How I arrived at that number was ((105 x 60) + (93 x 40)) / 100 = 100.2.

If your talking about the drum pump, I would cap it off after use.

I know you may want to use race fuel to extract as much as you can with your current combo but couldn't you also run 12:1 with pump gas?

Not really worried about the little extra power. Just don't want to melt a piston.

I hear plenty of people running 12 + on compression without issues, but I hear the other side that says it's required. I personally think I'm right on the edge. Since 98% of the time this setup will be used on the road course, I just want to play if safe.

Not trying to be an alarmest but I had a LS7 lifter fail. Part of the retainer plunger clip broke. Long story how I found it but I then replaced them with morels.

BTW - sweet build
