I don't personally know anyone getting that kind of mileage out of an oil change. Hmm looks like time for a poll.

You'll see on page 6-15 and 7-6 where it says the OLM will illuminate usually between 3000 and 10000 miles indicating the max range is 10K miles.
My daughter's '99 coupe has 140K+ miles on it and I change oil using the OLM, it has hit 10K miles more times than not. I go by the OLM on my ZR-1 also and have had it come on after as little as 1500 miles. But that was after many autocrosses where my daughter and I were hot lapping it and the engine saw it's 7100 RPM rev limit many, many times. It has also gone the maximum miles...it all depends on how it's driven.
After the new ILSAC GF4 standards were released in 2004, the 2005 and later Corvettes will go to 12000 miles on the OLM. There are several cars today that'll go 15000 miles.
In the '30s-'40s, the oil change interval was 500 miles. Engine and oil technology improves every year and 40K mile oil change intervals are in the very near future. The technology is already there, it just has to be incorporated into the cars but that's the easy part. The hard part is going to be getting the people stuck on 3000 mile oil changes to come into the 21st century. The first step will be the 2011 model year which is slated for a big jump in the oil change interval as GM releases a new oil standard that applies to every engine they use around the world. You can say goodbye to the GM4718M spec that was developed for Corvette engines only...all engines will use the same spec oil. ILSAC will release the GF5 spec at the same time but the GM spec will leapfrog it. In other words, you'll be able to use the new GM spec in place of GF5 but not the other way around.
