Very nice!!! Thanks for posting the pics.
Did you decide to put the fiberglass packing back in or did you leave it out?

Sweet, this is one of the better "How To's"..... Same question as above did you re-install the batting??

This mod seems to be catching on.. I'm in the process of getting a quote from a local exhaust shop.

Outstanding write up.
These mufflers aren't stainless steel are they?
Nothing special as far as welding goes?.
I am an expert at welding aluminum, not much steel experience, but I'm gonna do this in my shop. I love to learn new things.

The theory is to reinstall the "WOOL" to reduce drone and any "hollow "sound from any resonance.

Did you weld the 3" cover only on one end?
Also, what tool did you use to cut the flap in the muffler?
Thanks for the pics.

If you can weld aluminum you should have no problem welding steel. I am surprised you didn't learn on steel first since it is so much easier than Al.

He used a cutoff tool to cut the muffler open. It is a round abrasive disc.

How did they weld the back side of the pipe? Were 7x7 holes cut into both sides of the muffler so it could be welded all the way around, or did they only weld as much as the could reach from the one side?

Nice.... If you can weld aluminum then this is a piece of cake. All of the welding was done with a simple Mig welder. Not sure what material was the muffler made out of.....some people say it's stainless but I don't know because my magnet sticks to it.

I welded both sides of the 3 inch pipe. the key is to cut the pipe in half and little by little shave some material off the edges or cut another 1/4 inch off the piece's you already cut to get a tighter fit.I used a electric grinder with a thin cut off wheel to make the cuts.Hope I did not confuse you guys.

Sorry guys forgot to mention that we did cut both sides of the muffler, so then we can weld both sides of the pipe. Not really necessary but we had lots of time and it was great learning how to weld

How did you manage to get the right muffler completely out/off the car?
Did you have to loosen and lower the rear-diff cradle a little bit?

Some people lower the cradle..... I did not, just make sure if your using jack stands, lift the rear nice and high so you can wiggle those bad boys out, also remove the center bolts that hold the sway bar bushings out of the way.... no need to remove just let it hang down

To remove the right side muffler: Remove the heat shield above the mufflers, that gives just a little more wiggle room. I would try that before dropping the cradle for sure.

Yeah I totally forgot, I read a thread on this last summer and recall someone posting removing that shield gives just enough room to wiggle it out.

I much prefer using 2 jack stands and a 2x4 under the cradle to lift the back, especially if it is going to be resting high for a while, so not having to drop it would be a big plus.

So if I'm looking at the above pics correctly, GM effectively took a 3 inch pipe and crimped it down to what looks like 2.5 inch pipe or less going into the muffler ?? !!

Who makes a good after market system for the Z06 ? I was looking at SLP Loud Mouth's and Corsa Extreme's but it seems neither are made for our cars.
