I changed the cam in my LS1 Trans Am using the prayer method (spin the cam and hope for the best). Worked.

But the other way is to use pen magnets (16 of them) by removing the rocker arms and the pushrods, and putting the magnetic rods in place of the pushrods to hold them up.

Another option to do it right is to have a lifter tool. Did a search, and couldn't seem to find one for an LS7. They had one for the LS1.

snap on makes some flexible tool with magnets on the end. I've seen H-D mechanics use them for holding lifters up on bikes for a cam change. 16 of those would cost a fortune tho.

Maybe I'm too old school, but with a pushrod engine, why not just pull the pushrods and lifters? You have to adjust them after the cam swap anyway, and it is easy to do... That's what I've always done in the past.

Old school small blocks that would be correct because the lifters are under the intake manifold but on the ls gen motors the lifters are under the heads but have retainer trays that help keep them up when the came has been rotated and the pushrods are out.

This is what i am going to do, I know that Lowes sells metal rods like this pretty cheap, and it is easy insurance IMHO.

Ah, so. I guess I'm even older than I thought.

We have used the prayer method for 13 years. Maybe 1000 camshaft swaps in that time. And only once it failed and it was a PITA.
