Default Oil consumption about 1 liter per 1000km

I drive my Z hard on the street and on the race track, but the other people I know donot have such a big oil consumption on their Z.

Any comment or similar experience?

Otherwise the car is running very well

GM street spec is 1qt per 100 gallons of fuel. That is a nice way to put it rather than per mile because it takes into account load. Under racing conditions oil consumption will go up.

Bet you're using Mobil 1, right? My LS1 ate that stuff like candy. Had to switch.

The term PCV relates to the Positive Crankcase Ventiltion system on your car - its purpose is to ingest any 'blowby' vapours back into the engine to be burnt.
As you can see in the diagram, the system utilises lines which terminate on the top of the engine oil tank.

The oil which flows through your engine is returned by the pump into the top section of the oil tank in the normal course of operation.

The returning oil from the engine is hot, and contains dissolved byproducts of combustion which flash off in the top section of the tank - so in practice, there is a lot of turbulent activity in the top section of the oil tank.

If you overfill the engine with oil , then, as a consequence, you will have too high an operating level in the tank, and the excess oil in the tank will be agitated, and drawn over, together with the vapour stream back into the engine.

It is important to check the oil level in accordance with the instructions in the handbook.

as said above....but the stock set up is ****....its useless. If you drive hard, you need a good size catch can. I fought this issue on my 416 for almost 2 years until I did this

I was eating alot of oil. A coated intake is never good

That is higher than what I get. I don't have a CC installed anymore (need to re-plumb and find a new mtg spot after making other changes), but even without it I don't go through oil that fast, even on the track. I don't use M1 5W-30 though.

What brand and exact weight did you switch to?

0-30 German Castrol (Syntec European formula). In my LS1 Trans Am it cut oil consumption from 1qt/2500 miles with Mobil 5-30 15K mile formula to 3/4qt 4500 miles, and that being driven a lot harder.

It is a true full group IV synthetic oil. Mobil is just a blend like the regular "Syntec" and a lot of other oils out there. To get a true Group IV you need to use Amsoil, 0-30GC, etc.

The GC doesn't shear as bad, and is a lot thicker than the Mobil 1 at operating temperature. To put it in layman's (but incorrect) terms, it is like a "35 weight" oil at 100*C.

I really just don't like mobil 1. After they lost a lawsuit to Castrol over their regular Syntec line, they began doing the exact same thing they sued over. Yeah, it's a solid business move, but to me, "Full Synthetic" should = Group IV, not a III and IV blend.
