[Z06] Video--New PR 11.02 Bone-Stock on Stock Tires

Ranger, I thought you were more into low rpm launches with full clutch engagement happening in the first 5-10 feet? How come you decided to launch at 3600 rpm? The video sounded like you just gave a little rev then slipped the clutch just a hair. Also, what is the current record for a stock zr1 on stock tires?

Congrats John!
Hope to see you again before the season is over!
Current record for a ZR1 is still my 10.740 @ 133.21 but I am hoping to improve on that some soon. I was there with John the day he made this great pass along with many others but I was running 10.8x's most of the day as I had not been to the track in almost a year.
Hope to see you again before the season is over!

On the 11.02 pass. After a fast one-piece release, the clutch locked up at about 12' - 14' of forward movement, as signaled by slight tire-chirp. At about that time just after the rear tires cleared the start line, the throttle was wide-open.
Fastest 60' times by a ZR1 on stock tires that I've witnessed is 1.70 by racerns. And Kyle has run very close to that.

I've amassed a large volume of high quality in-car video as part of the project I'm working on. It's use, in conjunction (split screen) with video from the starting line, helps illustrate the direct impact specific driver technique has on the performance of the car. Video/audio dramatically compress the learning curve.

John,
Simply outstanding. That launch was so good I found myself repeating the video over and over, focusing on the launch.
Very smooth.
You still running the original clutch?

The smooth launch comes from doing garage launch drills to embed muscle memory.
I had a new LS7 clutch installed after 166 passes. Inspection showed the original still had some life left, perhaps 50-75 more passes. The current clutch has approaching 110 passes. No issues other than its finicky personality, to which a driver, any driver, must adapt.
Because I've always launched this clutch at reduced rpm (3600 max) and have glazed it only a few times, I suspect this particular clutch will give close to 300 passes.

damn wish we could run anywhere close to those times @ our track here in SD, if so i would probably go to the drags more often to beat some of regulars
our track prep is usually horrible.
also was it an optical illusion or were you getting into the other lane at close to shut down area?

We rented the track; so only one lane was in operation. As such, once my car crosses the 1320' stripe, I always steer over to the left so as to carry more speed on the 180-degree right-hander onto the return road. Just trying to apply the lessons learned at 3X Track Attacks with you roadracers.

Congratulations on your great run Ranger! Thanks for sharing your experience with us and for the great video!
I am a newer owner to the Corvette Z06, but am amazed at how well these cars run in stock form both at the drag strip and on the road courses.

Ran a new PR yesterday. Bone-stock 2006 Z06 on stock tires (F1SC EMTs). Pass was 11.02 127.25 on a 1.70 60-foot. DA was about negative-750. The spin on the 1-2 shift kept the pass from being in the 10s. Still have some work to do.
Did a burnout to first smoke, released the foot brake and the car roared forward with the tires squealing.
Launch rpm was 3600. Fast clutch release. Fast throttle squeeze to wide-open-throttle. Induced clutch slip was minimal. Clutch lock-up occurred within 15 feet of the start line. That is very fast lock-up and the reason the 60-foot, 1.70, was fast for stock tires.
All shifts were fast with full throttle lift during clutch-in. Shifts were accomplished close to the limiter, without any limiter clips.
Spin on the 1-2 shift was the only flaw in the pass. Wasn't a way to avoid that without opting for a slower shift which would have delivered a greater time penalty. 330' was 4.72, despite the spin on the 1-2.
Hope to have the opportunity to run again on stock tires in good air when more drag radial and slick cars are in my lane. They help maintain rubber in the groove out to beyond the 1-2 shift zone.
My thanks to the six other racers who joined me in enjoying the fall air at MIR. It truly was a great day of camaraderie and sharing driving tips. Thanks also, as always, to Chris who collected video and audio for us.
My car now has 273 passes and 23,400 street miles. It went to the track with fresh oil and new differential and tranny fluids. Clutch fluid started the day pristine, but required periodic reservoir swaps after every 4 to 6 passes to stay ahead of clutch dust infusion. Clutch behaved fine; no glazes and no pedal issues, through the day's 18 burnouts and passes in five hours.
Here is the video:
The video will play in HD at full-screen, if watched on youtube. Crank up the volume for the sweet sound of a stock LS7 in full song.
Here is the time slip from the PR pass.
Finally, one editorial comment on the value of track rentals.
