Nitto NT05 vs. Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial II
Looking for the best possible wheel/tire setup for high horsepower (610-630 to the wheels) on the street. I thought I had made up my mind on the NT05 on my factory wheels. Then I ran across these ET Street Radial II's that I could get in a 345/35/18. I could make this work by getting 18" Z06 reproduction rear wheels. Which setup do you guys think is better for the street? Or do you have any other suggestions??

Another choice to consider: Hoosier drag radials sized 335/30-18. They will give you about a 5% gearing advantage compared to the taller tires and are pretty sticky.

Well, both the Hoosiers and the MT's are true drag radials so the NT05 should even be considered an alternative when comparing those tires. Now, NT05R is a great drag radial and will perform very well vs either the MT's or the Hoosiers. Also, I would look into a set of M&H... They stick something serious!

Thank you guys for the comments. I did forget to mention one thing. The setup that I am looking for is for street only. I may bring the car to the strip a few times, but thats it. I honestly think I am just getting overwhelmed with tire/wheel choices. My build will be pushing 630 rear wheel horsepower. What is the best wheel/tire choice for me????
Thanks!

I would try the NT05R first. I'm at 600rwhp and can go wide open in second without spinning on Hoosier R6 road race tires. Based on that I'd think a drag radial on your stock wheels would hold the power.

Do you think the NT05R would hold up well on the street? I always thought the NT05R was more for track only use, and just NT05 was for street...

If you want something that will last longer and hook better than a true street tire look into the R compound tires with a treadwear rating between 100 and 200.
I've driven on drag radials and road race tires for many years. My advice is stay out of rain and expect them to throw everything on the road on your car.

I daily drive mine, but I am trying to choose tires for a second set of wheels....leaning towards the Hoosier DR's due to the weight difference between them and the MT's. The NT05R's are on backorder everywhere, so I didn't even factor them into my decision making process. Now the debate is whether or not to buy 17's or 18's, or whether or not to buy someone's used drag pack (Rob G, RCC, or Ratt G) since all are currently selling decent drag setups.

The problem I see with this is that the track tires you want to run will probably never get up to the correct operating temps on the street so you might not get the extra traction you are looking for any way, but hey I'm not a tire engineer

With my exp with drs on the street I prefer a taller tire. My reasoning comes from the ability to tame the car down a tad from a dig. I went from a 26 to a 28 on my whipple cobra and it was a great move! Now with my c5z I pulled a 1.54 at the track on a 305/35/18 mt dr but on the street the tire is useless from a dig in 1st (484/439 and 4.10s)

You may also want to consider the Nitto NT555R, this is more of a street tire compared to the NT05R. It is available in a 335/30/18.

I have tried most. So here goes my take on it. Some facts and some opinions mixed make it interesting IMO. I make about 580 all motor then spray say a 100-150 shot, sometimes 200hp shots. Anyway I will speak in terms of whp so anything above is 580 + shot.
The MT2 will require a fair burnout to hook better on the street it's kind of a hard tire but will work better than most in rain. Will hook NA on 2nd, give it a shot to 700 and it spins if I did not do a GOOD burnout. At 772rwhp it was spin city from a roll in 2nd. With 0 camber at the rear I believe this will be a killer street setup.
The BFG will hook with less temp (just a bit of a haze) in them and slow, say 40mph no standing water, on the rain is not so scary. Cold they DEAD hooked the 700rwhp every time. These hook NA in 1st gear if hot on the street. Always used these on stock suspension settings.
The MH is one mean mean hook but also scare me ****less on rain. I want to try and see if they hook the 830rwhp in a 2nd gear roll. Unlikely . Maybe these will dead hook on the 772rwhp setup.
The Hoosier R6 is the best tire ever hehehe as I am more of a road racer but it is not really a drag radial. And I believe it will not dead hook the 700whp, I will try that in a couple of days in Mexico City. They hook the all motor setup well on track suspension settings.
NEXT... Hoosier DR slick rattg style

The BFG description seemed pretty interesting since I have never even considered them as an option. How is the weight on those tires? I have heard nothing but good things about the Hoosiers, they're light, sticky, and come in the right sizes...but I guess I need to compare the BFG's now. The only reason I would not want to go with a taller rear tire as mentioned above, is because I want to be in 4th gear when I cross the 1/4. Not sure how much an extra 1.3" of tire will effect the gearing, it may help off the line if you need to slow the rotation of the tires down, but I remember when the car was stock hitting the 1/4 mile right at the 3-4 shift point was annoying. Now, I am in 4th well before the 1/4, but with a taller tire I could end up back where I was. Again, not sure if a taller tire would push 3rd gear up to 132mph, but if it did, I would not go that route.

Now the street is a completly diff story, yea a car might dead hook from a roll but a dig is iffy. That's when I prefer a little taller tire. But againe power/gear I the reasoning for my op.

Do you think something like this would work?
