A few new postings on Hinson's Facebook page:

".... based on the observed puff of smoke shortly after the 3/4 mile mark and the near total absence of the drivers side rear quarter panel, tire and wheel - id say there was some tire or wheel failure ! Definitely NOT an issue of cross winds ! Glad the driver walked away !"

".... I heard to boom and thought it was a tire as well. I was about as close as any spectator could be at the moment it all went south."

There has been a lot of talk about how to properly attach a roll bar in a z06, rivits, welds, etc. While they probably should have been running a cage, I am curious on how this one was attached as it seems to have stayed in place pretty well after a roll at high speeds. Also, its kind of interesting that this z still had stock seats as many of us change those out pretty quick. Then again, maybe it would have been worse if an aftermarket seat was used and the driver was firmly locked in an upright position.

It appears the roll bar did it's job and so did the blue painter's tape as I see that the front bumper survived the wreck in good shape.

looks like the front of the drivers compartment took
most of the impact, the stock halo looks pretty intact

Praise GOD that the driver was not killed or severely injured!

whatever it was it probably saved his life. look at the halo on the driveside its crushed against the cage. had it not been there it might have came in alot more. the impact must have been intense look at the driver rear wheel, or whats left of it.

a roll cage would definately prevent any external injuries and keep your body in one piece...but this man is very lucky to walk away uninjured without a severe concusion or death from those kind of forces to his brain and other internal organs

I was approx at the 3/4 mile mark and got to see it. I will hold my thoughts on why, however it the roll bar setup saved his live, I also can attest to a setup like his in my deceased C5 saved my life. Look in my profile for threads started and you will see my photos from July of last year.

there was lots of crosswind but everyone i talked to said it wasn't a big issue - there were many fast cars that didn't blow off the track and word was it was tire failure.

We should know more once they read the data log and post up something.

At least one video of the Hinson crash exists. The photographer in the field looks real concerned as she checks to see if she captured the shot.

God didn't, but M/T engineers warned him. That would've been enough for me!
