Nitto NT05R, no traction after 200 miles, bad batch of tires or what?
I posted this over in the FI Section but figured might get better response in this section.
I purchased some 345/19 Nitto NT05R about a month and a half ago brand new. When I first purchased them they were BADASS. Hooked everywhere with my car making 750+ rwhp. It would even try to hook in 1st but as soon as I hit 2nd it would DEAD hook.
Now, 200 miles later, they will not hook even from a 70mph roll. The car skids sideways and is never straight. Also, I was cruising 45mph down the road, hit a wet patch left by sprinklers on the road, the car slid and I rubbed the curb.
Here are some pics of the tires. I have ridden with DR's my entire life with my 04 Cobra making 700+ and never ran into an issue like this.
As you can tell from the pictures, they look like they are shredding, or melting the rubber off the tires. When I do a burnout, all it does is throw these tiny peices of rubber out the back and it's not even sticky. I can sweep them up with my hand and pick them up and they just look like rubber graffiti.
Tires have about ~200 miles on them, never been to the track, did 1 short burnout to try to clean them up, didn't help.
Let me know what you guys think. BTW Both tires look like this.

When I was racing (motorcycles) that look was described as "cold shear"- meaning the tires are not operating at the temperature they should when being asked for traction. IDK if it relates to your situations, but ....What are you running for tire pressures, do they feel warm/ Hot after burnout or spirited driving?

R models are RACE tires. Race tire rubber compounds "heat cycle out" way before they wear out (cord). since these were street driven, I suspect that they were heat cycled out.....although you did not mention whaat ambient temperature you were attempting to get hem to "HOOK". R-compound tires require some heat in them to hook.
For an example of what I mean, please see the video of today's Auatralian GP.

I have been running them at 25psi and only did 1 burnout after I noticed the shearing.
They feel cold after the burnout and I was just street driving them. How do I fix the problem and how do I prevent it?

worst case scenario - you have to buy new tires; they do work very well. I suggest you take your posted pictures and send them to NITTO. Hard to ignore hard evidence of compound issues. Just a thought.

Why do we drive around with 700+ hp? It's useless in most if not all conditions as well. Plus this is a DOT tire and if I said, "HEY GUYS I DRIVE SLICKS AROUND EVERYDAY WHY DO THEY SUCK" then maybe I would understand your comment. But I didn't. I asked why a DOT approved street tire that is made for competition is breaking apart on me. So if you have nothing constructive to add then please keep your comments to yourself.

The NT05R is a drag radial. You can use them on the street with great results. I am on my second set right now actually.
To the OP, the tires are not hooking because they have a glaze over them from overheating. This happened to my first set after a burnout I held for a LONG time just for fun. The glazed rubber has coated the tire and needs to be shaved off. The glaze is not allowing the tire to heat up and cool properly.

True, but I do not want this to happen again on the next set of tires. If it's something I did then my fault, I'll go buy new tires, but I'd like to know what exactly happened to prevent this.

If you're looking for constructive technical advice instead of hyperbole and opinion, talk to the manufacturer, not an anonymous message board. Nitto no doubt wants you to be happy with their product so that you'll buy more. I'll bet there's someone at Nitto trained to answer all of your questions.

I did speak with Nitto. They pretty much said they are a drag radial and do not offer any sort of warranty of them.
Good news is, after playing around with the tire pressure and doing a few burnouts I think they are starting to grip again. I settled in at 25psi cold, did a burnout and counted to 4 as soon as I saw white smoke and it definitely made a difference. I will try a longer burnout tomorrow and post up the results.
