Looking @ your bearing surfaces on the cam, I'd say the oil isn't holding up. What kind of oil temps are/were you seeing? Mobil 1 falls off quickly if the temp. soars. (300+)

Also, did you load the engine @ cold startup numerous times? You know, start it and rev it just to show your friends how good the pipes sound? (I've seen it done on bikes, that's why I ask...)
Oil temps at least while I have had the car I don't believe have ever been over about a 190 - 200 degrees.

I have never loaded the engine cold big no no in the both aviation and the automotive world. ( I am an A&P, Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic with an IA, Inspection Authorization.)

The Chevy Mechanic at the dealer told me that he has seen this before but in LS truck motors. This was the first that he had seen in a Vette motor.

Glad to hear she's back up and running and all is well. Going to pat myself on the back now, what a diagnosis. Dead on.

It could be the pic angle/quality but it looks to me as if the cam / bearing journal area looks a little blued and grooved. Did they check the cam bearings?

I am wondering, especially from the folks that have experienced a rocker failure if you think it may be a rocker arm failure?

Thanks

Mark
Dang, I have the same build date: Dec, 2007 as you. How many miles on your Z when you first started noticing the noise? I'm at 8200 miles...

Glad to hear you found the culprit. That's one nasty looking lifter.

Hope you're back on the road soon.

Just thought I would give you all an update.... I now have 28,000 mile on the Z06 and everything seems to be working fine at this time. I have heard that GM Engineers got the parts that came out of my car and I was told that the camshaft did not have the proper hardness and that is what damaged the lifters.

Glad to see they found the issue! Even more I'm glad you caught it before anything went seriously wrong requiring a new motor. That tells us all to be very vigilant on ALL of our cars when driving!

Maybe there is an issue here?... Everytime I change my oil, and I change it frequently, there's that metal fuzz on both magnetic drain plugs. SHOULDN'T have metal on the drain plugs. But, seems like it's happening to everyone who owns a Z?

Interesting thread.. This prompted me to check my engine build date. Mine was built May 20, 2008. Is there any way to know how long this bad batch of cams was used?

They didn't say, other than these appear to be fairly isolated incidents..... I know of one or two others from here on the forum.

I have never had any. I've owned the car 15 months and have done probably 4 oil changes.

Do you have magnetic drain plugs? They did away with them in 2008. Maybe for this very reason? I purchased the drain plugs from Fichtner Chevy.

Default Same problem

Same song, second verse. It was SERIOUSLY loud too... if you encounter this problem you will not have to wonder about it - it'll make you stop the car and not drive it on sound alone even though it'll run (a little rough) close to normal. My '07 has a 10-2006 manufacture date. It's at Jim Ellis Chevrolet having the cam, lifters, etc., replaced under warranty. God bless the bullet-proof 427 and a 100k powertrain warranty!

For the record - 95K miles.

Maybe you can have the valve guides checked for wear while the engine is apart.......?

Really? Tell that to my coworker who had worn guides at 60K miles.
