Default 2008 Z06 with blown engine - suggestions?

2008 Z06 with 22K miles in it with a blown motor not being covered by warranty, exhaust valve issue. Question now is, what should I do going forward?
Easy answer is to put a new LS7 in, but if I am going to spend $14K is there a better use of the money?

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm assuming you're modded, given it's not being covered by your warranty ?

What mods do you currently have ?

The car is not being covered by warranty because I bought the car used about a year ago and it had a Hypertech unit on it. I was pretty sure that I had reflashed the ECU, but as the car would not start afterwards it looks like it did not take.

Like I said, I am looking forward at options.

Well, here are a few options.

1. Rebuild/repair your engine if possible. I don't know the extent of the damage, but this could be an option.

2. Get another stock LS7 to put in your car, whether that's from a dealer or a vendor that sells complete engines.

3. Get a different engine to put in your car. Either a cheaper one or one that holds a lot more power (depending on your wallet).

Tough break. I wonder why it wouldn't flash back to stock.

Anyway, good luck with the repairs, however you proceed.

A complete tear down and rebuild should not cost more then 3-4k. Just go that route I'd say....

If he dropped a valve and air conditioned the side of his block (along with head and crank damage which usually results), then he ain't gonna be tearing down and rebuilding that mill for 3- 4k.

I'm sorry, I read it thru quickly. Didn't see anywhere mention that the block was toast.
R&r is typically 600-1000. Figured parts and labor was 2-3k depending how bad.
But ya never know how bad til you're into it.

Sorry for the confusion.

To the OP, I'd just buy a built motor from the board here and slap it in. I had a built 427 that I was selling for 10k, would have worked for ya.
Good luck.

It's all good. I don't think he mentioned anything about the block, so you make a fair point.

Im currently putting mine back together and its right at 6k with a new block , wisco pistons , new head , feria exh valves/springs and clevite bearings and assembly of the short block . The crank and rods speced out perfect so i didnt have to buy them .

Im at 50k miles so im replacing everything else just so that everything is new , you might not need to with 22k

I will probley spend 8-9k by the time its back together with gaskets, oil pump , push rods , lifters , cam , HS rocker arm trunions , Katech LS9x clutch and a tune .

I dont know how much it is to R&R a motor/clutch in a Z06 but i will be doing that myself .

If you're staying stock, 19256555, comes with a GM warranty.

A lot of people might be surprised to find out it's not as expensive to rebuild an LS7 as you might think (or even build one from scratch for that matter).

When mine first blew up back in August of 2009, a chunk of the number 7 piston broke off and put two hairline cracks in the cylinder wall. The total cost of rebuilding it (both parts and labor) was $3500 which included $961 for Diamond forged pistons as well as having the cylinder resleeved.

I currently have a backup motor that I'm gonna have put together in the new couple of months. I pieced the motor together (literally) from various sources across the country and the total bill for everything will be right around $5500 for a long block that'll be ready to drop in. If I want to have forged pistons installed then it'll be closer to $6500.

While some of these high dollar builds may seem like they're worth the money, I currently have close to 500 passes on my motor which in my opinion is a definite bargain compared to what I could have paid.

Default First, go talk to a lawyer.

First, go talk to a lawyer. It doesn't hurt to talk.
One of our cars blew the motor a few years ago and they said they would not cover it because there was only 1 qt of oil in the pan. No signs of an oil leak, so we must have abused it. My wife called the lawyer and faxed him all our maintenance receipts. The lawyer sent a letter and followed it up with a phone call a day later. The general manager called my wife and said they had reevaluated the issue and they were shipping in a new motor ASAP.

If you have any motor skills it may be a great experience rebuilding yourself. If you don't, find a friend that does and take the opportunity to learn.

Replace the cast hypereutectic pistons with forged pistons and tool steel wrist pins. Also replace the 2-piece exhaust valves with quality one piece valves and the steel valve guides with bronze guides.

Best of luck!
