[ZR1] ZR1 Vibration Issues

Burning Brakes
It is gone.
This is ment for those who still have some degree of a vibration.. DONT GIVE UP ON A TRUE FIX.. [ I didn't,, and today the vibration in my ZR1 was repaired with new Rotors not a roadforce balance]. I went to four of the local chevrolet dealers in Tulsa Oklahoma. I spoke with three service managers and one service wrighter. The first three, I did not like what they had to say. When I first talked with the service manager at the fourth dealership he told me how they would try and find the problem. He also said I would be welcome to stay with my car while any and all of the work was being preformed, I spent a day and a half watching while the technician went through GM's steps one by one to find the problem. After five road test, two tire ballance, check rotor balance. He found both front rotors were out of ballance. He installed new balanced rotors.[FIXED] I would like to add. While I was there No one ever ask what I was doing in there repair area. They were all nice people. It was a good experience.
The car is now smooth. Driving is fun again. If anyone needs a good dealership to repair your corvette you might check them out. You can PM me if you have any questions.
GM THERE IS A LESSON HERE. IF YOU WOULD DO THIS FOR ALL WHO HAVE THIS PROBLEM YOU WILL KEEP SELLING YOUR PRODUCT TO PEOPLE LIKE ME.

the problem is it's not always the fix either...they put new balanced rotors on mine and it didn't fix it....but yes, defiantly have them put new balanced rotors seems to fix it for everyone but me lol....

Don't want to be a Cassandra, but have a read of this latest AM Service Bulletin regarding what needs to be done after installing new CCM rotors. Pretty scary stuff if you ask me.

I came across this thread by accident ....and since I've experienced a similar problem on my '11 GS ... I've been following along with interest.
My experience has been that steering wheel vibration can be resolved by taking care of three things:
1) Make sure your tire runout is not excessive. Anything more than .060" is cause for concern. The problem can be the tire, the wheel, or both. But if the tire is not running 'true', repeated balancing will not help. I made my own gage for checking. Very simple to do once you have the car jacked up.
2) Find someone that can do a very good dynamic balance. Have them remove any preset limits from the balancer. Machines can be programmed so if the imbalance is less than predetermined limit, it will show a '0'. They will try to tell you that less than .5 ounce can't be felt. B.S. Get them as close to '0' on inside and outside.
3) Don't forget the rotors. The cast iron ones on my GS as VERY heavy. I had them balanced by a local shop .... and they weren't off much .... but they weren't perfect either. Now they are.
Take care of these three areas and chances are good you will solve any vibrations issues.

Vibrations are driving several of us crazy- Mine is fixed now. I have a 2013 Z06 60th anniversary ed. Had vibration in 5th gear. Being in 5th gear it was at certain speeds because of the gears. GM had heard about the issue before and authorized dealer to replace 5th gear? did not fix it. Then GM authorized replacing the entire transmission- 5th gear fixed, in fact the whole transmission feels different. In fact the whole car feels different.
I would not rule out something in the drive train causing the problem???? My vibration was clearly seen in gear shift, but I could feel it in the clutch too. It was also odd in that it was only under acceleration. Very frustrating experience- especially since 2013 is last C-6 , it would seem that after 4 or 5 years of building something the bugs would be gone?
GM needs to do a better job of listening too the owners of the more limited production cars. I was impressed that I got call from GM after they read some of my early posts on the forum. I was not impressed by having to experience RR of the transmission twice. It created several other issues which has taken multiple trips to the dealer. I would also suggest GM not send a superficial survey form for these type vehicles. Corvette owners are more loyal than most other brands and I think would be glad to share their thoughts on what they'd like to see.

I've yet to check run out with the tires on (dealer checked it all from hub to rims and it checked out ok) so I might do that and see. Perhaps with indexing I can solve it (finding the spot that has less run out -if there is any that is to begin with)
At any rate, from what I understand of those rotors, they "evaporate" from the inside out, and that's an uncontrolled evaporation, which means, at any point in time, a rotor can become unbalance, or, become balanced. Think of it as a tire: as it wears down, it can become unbalanced and thus you will need to re-balance them once in a while...wish we had access to those tiny rotor weight that some of the new rotors have, we'd be able to balance them anytime!

Didn't have a vibration but got one. How it happened and the fix follows.
I removed my wheels to clean the insides and inspect the brakes and suspension after a track day. Being the first time I've removed the OEM lug nuts I saw what piece of "work" they are so I threw them in the trash and purchased some good ones along with Gorilla locks - one for each wheel. After that at about 82 MPH I had the dreaded vibration - badly.
Back in the garage I removed a set of nuts and weighed them. The Gorilla locks were 10 grams (.35 ounce) heavier than the other lugs. So I probably should have sprung for 20 of them rather than just 4. But seeing that the other lugs have some air space in the tops where our studs are not threaded, I just added some lead to the inside, weighed and balanced the lugs and now all is smooth again. Wouldn't have thought that .35 ounce at 2" from the center of the hub could make that much of a difference.
Another thing I noticed is that our front brake cooling ducts are very good at blowing things into the inner (unfinished) portion of the brake disk. I fished a portion of a plastic bag from inside my right front disk.

Any chance you put a standard lug nut in and checked for the vibration prior to installing the offset weights? This might have told us that just moving the index on the wheels can cause the vibration and that perhaps more of the ZR1's are prone to the problem.

Yes, I did leave one OEM nut on each wheel as the Gorillas were on back order. I had a light buzz in the steering wheel around 80-85 and could feel the back wheels vibrating a little through the seat.
The OEM nuts weighed 50 +/- 0.2 grams which is close to the new ones I put on at 46 +/- 0.2 grams. The Gorillas weight varied from 59.55 - 60.19 grams. So I adjusted the weight on each respective lug nut to match that of the lock on each wheel. I just have to remember not to mix them up.
FWIW, the wheel monkeys at the dealership had beat the heck out of the OEM nuts with their air gun when I had my TPS replaced in two wheels. I actually stripped two of them trying to get them off. The lesson is that no-one touches my lug nuts again except me.
Hope this helps.

Vibration fixed after 2 years
I have been going back-and-forth with my dealer regarding the vibration issue. I've had multiple attempts at tire balance as well as on car tire balancing. I finally switched to a separate set of wheels and still have my Vibration. This forced the dealer to realize that the vibration was not coming from improperly Balanced Wheels. The dealer Inspected further And discovered that there was a bad wheel bearing on the left Front wheel. The Dealer replaced the wheel bearing today And vibration issue Is resolved.
Sorry, I am using voice recognition to dictate this and the dictation is causing crazy capitalizations.

Changing the wheelbearings did not help my vibration issue.
I was wrong. I still have the same vibration issue after my dealer changed the left front wheel bearing. They still have yet to change the ceramic disks.

Any new updates on how solutions are working? I FINALLY have mine back out Hope to do some serious road testing this weekend and see how the vibration is -the next step is to replace the rotors.

Everything done up to the point of replacing the rotors had not cured the problem. Push for the rotor replacement. In my case there was no confusion...the next road test immediately after the rotor replacement, vibration was gone. Wheels/tires indexed EXACTLY the same on each corner. Only variable was the rotors.

I have about 1500 miles since my front rotors were replaced and still no hint of vibration at any speed.

just noticed the 75-80 mph steering wheel vibration (significant) this weekend after a "factory-spec" alignment from the dealer due to leftward pull during everyday driving...never had the vibration before (or at least not so noticeable)...help!
it's a 2011 with 3500 miles

Do you know if they took the front wheels off or not. I have always suggested that those ZR1's that don't exhibit the problem had the luck of the draw when the wheel were placed on the lugs. That's what the indexing is all about. If your ZR1 is going to have it, then R&R the wheels may bring on the problem.

so what next...call dealership for rebalance? is this warranty coverage?

Note that your last post was #439 - embedded within those posts are a number of satisfactory solutions, depending on what you are willing to accept. But it also depends on how hard you push, how willing your dealership is about going to bat for you and how whoever it is that gets the call at GM is feeling on the day the dealer calls for approval.
In other words, it's a crapshoot beginning with the day you got your ZR1, even if you road tested it for this specific problem.
Oh, and if your dealer is not real savvy on the problem, well........
