Default Ad valorem tax

Well, today I visited my County tag office and asked what my 2012 tag taxes will be on my 2010 ZR1.
Not good news...........$1560.00
I guess I better save a few bucks before my birthday (Oct.)

JimmyZ,

Thankfully you bought at the right time of year. At least you have a good while to go yet. Gotta pay to play. Jackson county where I am was about the same for that car as well. Just go out and punch the loud pedal a couple of times and that will get you smiling again.

Potential $130 a month hidden cost of ownership.
I think that GA cost is close to Calif registration cost too.

unfortunately, I wouldn't say this cost is "hidden"... overlooked, perhaps !

certainly known to those living in/registering cars within jurisdictions imposing such taxes... not fun

Holly Crap. Just checked the website... $4.75 per $100.00 assessed value... It is almost an additional car payment...

Why do you live there again?

One of my best perks in the military was being able to retain legal residence in South Dakota, no income tax and $30 tags regardless of cars value!

What do you mean "almost"? It's like an additional 2 or 3 car payments.

Why do you live there again?
Because this is where the money is?

Not even close! The tags for my '11 for 2012 will be $732. That's half what I paid last February when I took delivery. The "temporary" doubling of the CA car tax expired in July!

Of course, they make up for it in every other conceivable way. CA politicians NEVER met a tax they didn't love!

Washington State used to tax that way and it got voted out by the people and now tags are 40-80 a year. I'm sure the state is giving it to us in other ways to make up for it though.

Don't get upset. That money is needed by the state to give to people who don't like to get up in the morning for work. Such folks need understanding and compassion and your money.

Well hopefully you bought it from a private party so you didn't have to pay sales tax. Thats the one good thing about living in GA
