Don't shy away from the 06. They are the lightest and probably have the most aggressive factory tune. I bought mine a year and a half ago with 2,500 miles on it. It now has just under 11,000 trouble free miles. Mine had the roof recall done before I bought it.
It is the best Corvette I have ever owned and I have been driving them for 40 years.

I too was fixated on owning an 08+ because of the new trans...
But, I just picked up a VERY nice LEMANS BLUE 06 Z from a great forum member here and am glad I went with what I originally wanted... LEMANS BLUE Z06!

The LPE tank is about $350 + core. Upgrades the dry sump tank from 6 quarts to 9 quarts.
I read a guide on it on the forums, seemed easy enough to install. Mostly revolved around disconnecting the oil lines connected to the tank, fishing it out of the fender, then putting the new one in its place. On my next oil change, I'll be doing this swap.
My 06 has been problem free with the exception of a leaking oil gasket. However, that appears to be common on all LS motors, not just an 06 model.
I don't think there are any problems (with the exception of the bearing needle on 07s and the roof recall on 06-07s) that affect a particular model year. Review the year to year changes and see if there is anything you want in the car. Then see what you can buy for the budget you allocated.

some people haven't been reading the threads about the later trans shifting problems....
i have owned 06 and 07 z's...my 06 felt much more aggresive than my 07
you won't go wrong with any year if you find the right car....good luck

That said, I do believe they modified the synchros on the later years, but I forget which year added it. 2010 or 2011.

my point is the model of trans or any other changes in later years does not mean a trouble free car....my 2 z'2 have been excellent also....
my properly working trans in my 07 is just as good as anyones properly working 08 and above trans ...and visa- versa...
my 07 fon fellows was built in the rocker arm issue build dates...no problem with mine...[35k on it now].. finding the right car is important...worrying about if this is gonna break and thats gonna break will take all the joy out of owning the car...
o.p. find one that you like...that fits the budget comfortably ..and drive the heck out of it

Thank you to everyone for taking the time to provide me with invaluable information! I know once I find my Z I will have plenty of friendly support...

You are quoting total capacity of the oil system. I'm referring to the capacity of the dry sump tank itself.
06-08 - 6~ qts
09+ - 8.5~ qts
The remaining 2~ qts of oil sits in the oil pan and elsewhere in the engine.
The LPE tank extends the dry sump tank capacity from 6 qts to 9 qts, for a total capacity of 11 qts.

Yes I am sure. You are misinterpreting what I've said.

A bit shortsighted of me, but hopefully all is cleared up for anyone who monitors the thread.

i wanted an 09 for a few reasons.
1. The new transmission
2. the 3LZ interior
3. Most importantly the upgrades in the differential and the axles that closely relate to the ZR1 because I plan on strapping some DRs on her and making a few passes. 09 axles and rear seem to hold up very well. 08s are said to be good too However if you want to run sticky tires the 06-07s have been known to break an axle here and there.

I bought my 2006 Z06 (2LZ) 25 months ago. I'm the second owner. It is still covered until January 2013 under the GMPP zero deductable warranty that the original owner bought when new. Great car with no problems for the original owner or me. The newer years may have improvements but the none of the newer Z's are faster.

Also, when comparing the weights, about 10-11 pounds of the additional 43 pounds of weight is for the larger oil reservoir and the additional 2.5 qts of oil. Another upgrade was with the change in transmissions in 2008^. The steel gears are 20% wider for additional strength from 2008^, so I'm guessing more steel equals more weight in the transmission. Sometimes the benefits of the added weight are worth more then not having that additional weight.

Some changes made in the transmission and differential housings increased weight because of additional material added to increase strength and heavier axles to increase their strength.
A couple of pounds here and a couple of pounds there add up to the 43 pound increase, but most of that weight is beneficial.
