iPad INSTALLED in my Z06
I've been running this idea through my head for about 2 weeks. I already installed an iPad in my XC90 R DD, which I never use lol.
I'm getting closer and closer to making my Z a FULL track car and this will be the last year I drive it on the street.
I have an extra dash trim piece sitting next to my desk and I just slid the iPad in it and that's what sparked this whole project.
Here is the deal:
You can relocate the air conditioning to the glove box, I ran the GM wire harness over there but didn't have time to cut up the glove box and see if they actually will pull over enough WITHOUT having to cut and extend the wire harness.
Cutting it and extending the wires is NOT hard, it just takes time and is kind of ghetto : but remember my car is a beater toy / track car. It's all types of ghetto!
After you remove the stereo, air conditioning controls, ash tray, seat heaters. I installed the dash trim piece so I could measure how I was going to FIX the iPad to the dash trim piece.
GUESS WHAT
The iPad (1) fits so well that you can install a DOCKING STATION inside your dash trim piece and slide the iPad in and out OR permanently install it. Totally up to you!
I had to leave the track and head home so I didn't finish the "job" because now that I've learned that a docking station will fit in there, I'm going this route.
As far as audio goes, there doesn't seem to be much room to use the 3.5 headphone jack but you can get an Apple plug device that Y's to micro USB and a Headphone jack, which actaully admits more signal power than the standard 3.5.
If you Y-cable (3.5-RCA) to your aftermarket amp OR Line Out converter (stock stereo), the iPad in NONE HEADPHONE JACK MODE will NOT control the volume , so you must get a volume RCA signal controller, basically you will have a seperate volume controller for your iPad music, you can mount this tiny *** wherever!
I'll update everyone next week when I finish the JOB! WooHoo, it looks damn good.
Oh and I put in a pretty badass seat:

It's a shame you can't have this AND the HVAC controls in the console, because that would be phenomenal.
I wonder if you could with a different tablet...

Probably could when the smaller iPad comes out this year. I think it will be half the size. Probably about the exact size of the stock stereo.

May I ask, what is the true purpose of this feature? Not trying to downgrade the hard work and originality, but I don't see the logic behind this. Am I missing something?
I got the new seat part. Hahahaha And yes, it does look bad-***.

The iPad? I would say its a kick *** source for music, navigation, bluetooth feature, phone call features, etc. Seems like a lot of work though to accomplish. Great idea though.

OBDII apps
There are some great OBDII apps that can even create a gauge panel, G meters, virual dyno etc on the iPad screen. That would be really useful on a track car.
The music, video and internet radio apps could be cool too..I agree that losing the HVAC controls is probably not good for a street car though.
Cool idea!

Since the iPad sits flush with very little effort, I feel that's a sexy neat idea and I'm going to run a "racekeeper, motec, harrys lap timer" track mate on it.
I'm also losing my heated seats so I didn't need the buttons but they could easily be relocated.
It actually is NOT much work at all. I'm not done though, this whole docking station idea is cool but I just realized I can send bluetooth audio to my amp!
You could do this with any tablet
Now that I'm leaning towards bluetooth, who cares! So many options....
I did notice that the 3.5 iPad headphone out did produce more signal than my crappy line out converter, which steals sound from my stock system and converts it to RCAs for my aftermarket amp. My line out is most likely a cheap one though.

SO, I just figured out a pretty sick bluetooth transmitter that will take power from a micro USB, I have the 2.1 USB power cigarette lighter that will power the iPad and bluetooth.
If you send signal via bluetooth from my iPad, I can now control the volume vrs having an RCA line in and out volume controller.
I can't believe how easy this is, I will have the logistics wrapped up soon if anyone needs help with this.
You could also get a plastic iPad case and attach it to your dash piece. Then you could make a mini cradle system. The iPad case will site flush in our factory dash. I plan on doing this FYI

They have a new OBII BCM thingy coming out that will connect to your cars computers. You basically can control the cars functions through the iPad.
If it was for a street car, I would want it.
I'm sure they have some OBII Apps that can do some crazy crazy stuff.
Just think of the bluetooth possibilities

This guy has made some pretty neat gadgets to assist in installing iPads in vehicles. I remember some videos of some modules that had volume control ***** to make it simpler...
