[Z06] What's the best place to buy a replacement alternator?
#2
I'd check forum vendors' price on a new OEM unit first.
You used to be able to repair a solid state regulator back in the day; the new stuff maybe not (sealed/encapsulated). Maybe check with your local starter/alternator shop for a replacement regulator module (and I'm sure they could test what you've got to confirm it's bad).

You can get a rebuilt replacement alternator from Pep Boys and it will work. I'm running one now.
If you want to spend about twice that, you can get a brand new OEM from your dealership.

I will have my Napa store check it before ordering one though.
Not looking to spend $600 on an OEM replacement. rebuilt probably just as good. GM's part only lasted 38k miles. Napa gave me a price of about $300 b/c I would have to pay to ship it from Chicago or Atlanta...might as well get it online if I have to pay shipping anyway.

My son, who is a Caddy/Porsche tech said it could not be repaired or buy just the voltage regulator.

That's what I'm betting on.
I have been running mine from Pep Boys now for several months. Paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $200.00 and some change, I don't think it was quite $300, I want to say about $260.00, plus my core for it.
I just checked, it's $261.99

I have not attempted a rebuild nor am I absolutely sure it can be done but recently one of the car programs on Speed Channel rebuilt a modern alternator. I would check with your local auto parts store for a rebuild kit. The difficult part appeared to be unsoldering 3 heavy regulator connections. I think it might have been shown on Two Guys Garage or Muscle Car on Speed. It would be worth investigating if you like taking things apart and saving money.

We have a local Auto electric business that rebuilds alternators. He is excellent. Talk to people in your area and see if they can recommend a competent repair shop that specializes in this. You can also try Gene at GM Partshouse if you choose to buy new.

If at all possible, have your stock one rebuilt. You will have a known history and all the worn parts will be replaced. A rebuilt GM unit is likely better than an aftermarket/rebuilt unit which may or may not have the same guts/specs. Could be more of a universal fit type.
Find a competent shop under the "Automotive electrical" section of the yellow pages (do they even make those anymore?).

Rebuild parts not available?
I was looking to rebuild my alternator or have it rebuilt. I checked with a local Austin shop that has been in business for 30+ yrs and does nothing but alternators and starters. They said the only parts available for the C6 alternator were bearings. Couldn't even get all the parts for a full rebuild so I went with a new rebuilt one.

They do and they run about 175 + 25 core charge. I've heard a lot of people trash autozone rebuilt parts especially alternators and starters. I bought one and I'll see how long it lasts. I sure as hell wasn't gonna pay 600+ for a new OEM.

Another option is to look at the upgraded ones. A bit more amperage is nice on a modded car.

Nations or DC power both make nice ones. They are $550-650 though.

I have 60K on the one I bought for just a shade over $200 from an E-bae source in CA, who claimed they were new units. It appeared new and had exactly the same PN and name ID tag as the GM unit that died.
