dealer won't fix a p0430 cat code under emmisions warranty
The ZR1 threw a p0430, which is "low cat efficiency" or something, when I started driving it last month. I thought, no problem because the emissions warranty is 8yrs/80,000 miles.
I was initially bummed that the "fix" for this was to update to the 2012/13 cat system, which has 4 cats instead of 2 and requires changing the manifolds, short cat section, and the entire x-pipe with the two new huge cats. The Z06 guys have found out this system is a lot more restrictive and the best system is the one on the 09-11 ZR1. I also have the full titanium Akrapovic EVO exhaust and that nice 9lb x-pipe isn't compatible with the 2012/13 OEM exhaust. I'd lose at least 10 HP and add 20-30lbs to the car.
Fortunately in March 2014 GM added a TSB specifically for a p0420 or p0430 code for Grandsports, Z06s, and ZR1s to just reflash the ECU to expand the acceptable operating range of the cats before the CEL trips. Works for me! Problem is, the dealer doesn't think this is an emissions warranty and wants to code it as an ECU upgrade and charge for it, which I believe is dead wrong. I have the extended warranty so they're throwing it under there so there's no cost to me, but I wanted to let the community know this may be something you have to fight for if you get this code. The cat is the problem and GM is saving a ton of money by flashing vs. replacing a few thousand dollars worth of exhaust under warranty. Both are still emission related and nobody should have to pay for either option when under 8 years old.

Towards the end it even shows the directions of how to charge this to the emissions warranty.

Interesting... My 2011 ZR1 is in the shop right now having both (2) cats replaced in the original 09-11 configuration because one of them went south recently. The service manager told me they do not and would not go the 4 cat configuration but, the catalytic converter manf. wants them to reprogram the ECU to protect the cats from future failure. They made no mention if they charge for this service.
Update - One month later: The service manager had a surprise...you guessed it, 4 new cats and X-pipe. Flashed the ECU to stock, bummer.

I broke a #4 exhaust valve spring last December. Car went into limp mode and trashed the cats. After the valve spring was replaced, I got the 0430 code. Dealer willingly replaced cats and X pipe under emissions warranty. Car had 21K on the clock.

Either way, 10-15hp is hard to feel on the butt dyno if you got the new system.
