Default Car shifts into 3rd, redlines, rpms slowly fall...

I have a 2006 C6z with 39k miles, the past week or so I've driven my car fairly hard. On rare occasions when shifting from 2nd to 3rd, towards red line, I will push the shifter in to 3rd but it feels like it doesn't catch, the car acts like I missed a gear, redlines, then slowly drop rpms. I'm positive it's going in to the 3rd gear slot but it will just rev out. The first time it happened I assumed I actually did miss a gear, but it's happened several times since then. Is this just a slipping clutch or a sign of something else, thanks for any advice.

New Info: Changed out clutch fluid, problem still persists. There isn't a problem with shifting at redline from 1st to 2nd, only appears to be from 2nd to 3rd. There isn't any grinding so I'm not sure if it could be the synchros.

How does your clutch fluid look?

Clutch fluid could certainly afford to be replaced. That's actually the first thing I'm going to do. I've read up on the ranger method.

can you ever actually feel it engage in 3rd? Best advice I can give to getting a quick non-binding 2-3 shift, is simply push forward with the palm of your hand, don't grab the shifter.

I don't actually feel it ever engage. But I'm 100% positive I'm putting it all the way in gear.

Sounds to me like it just isn't going all the way into 3rd. If that is the case, it is probably an issue with the synchronizer assembly...like damaged keys or damaged teeth on the blocker ring. Check with RPM Transmissions or RKT56..both site sponsors. They should be able to give you a better idea.

Does it happen when just driving normally (read: gently)? Aftermarket shifter?

If you don't feel it click into gear then chances are you might have a bent key on that syncro not letting it engage the gear. Maybe a bent fork?

I would also pull the console and make sure the bolt holding the shift rod to the shifter is tight, and also the shifter base to the torque tube is tight. If either one of those move, it isn't going to be moving the forks inside the trans correctly or enough to shift.

It goes into 3rd normally shifting though?

If the shifter is full engaged into 3rd gear slot and the engine just revs, it's most likely you broken off all the engagement tooth on 3rd gear. I have seen it on 2nd gear many times but first for the 3rd gear.

The issue only happens when I try to shift around redline. Daily driving and shifting at lower rpm is relatively flawless. Stock shifter as well.

Might just be the clutch getting tired...the pressure plate anyway. If you can baby it into gear, and it drives normal except when getting after it and it won't change gear cleanly, I'd bet on the clutch not disengaging all the way.

I'd have the clutch looked at before I'd take apart any tranny stuff.

I also agree it's likely the clutch.

I appreciate the help. I'll look in to replacing the clutch. I come from the N54 platform so nothing is ever the simplest explanation.

Don't keep pushing it until you fix the clutch. You will end up breaking a snap ring and tearing up a gear set or bending a fork. Also, do not cheap out on a clutch as you will regret it.

Interesting read, i have a similar issue. When racing and shifting at red line from 2 to 3 its hard to get into the slot. Not always, but i spent an entire day racing and towards the end of the day i started feeling this...
I thought it could've been the cheap clutch fluid i put in, valvolene, that boils at about 311 or so...
I have since changed to a better fluid but have been trying to get it looked at... everyone tells me they cant check the clutch...

It sounds exactly like you are hitting 5th, but I hear you are not. When the problem happens if you shift-up by moving your arm straight back you can verify if you were in third because 4th is the next gear. If you hit 6th, then you know it was 5th you went into.
Another thing you can do is to quickly double-clutch to see if that works-around the problem.
