Default For Z owners with Headers......have you had starter problems ??

If no problems with having to replace a starter, What kind of headers do you have ?

My problem is, I keep having starter problems , because my ( Pfadt ) Headers sit to close to my starter. I plan to buy a different set of headers.

Which brand of 1-7/8"headers are the easiest to install and will leave room to install a blanket over the starter or will have the clearance needed for a Heavy duty MSD type starter ?

Thanks all

Willie

I have had my American racing headers for two years without any problems. They were surprisingly easy to install. They are close to the starter but last time I had to remove the headers to do my heads I decided to heat wrap the starter just for insurance.

I have Pfadt 1 7/8" headers with no starter problems, but the headers were ceramic coated. Between that and the EE ceramic coated tunnel plate with insulation and my catted x-pipe, the interior tunnel and console run cooler than OEM.

I've had the ARH headers and catted X for ~6k now. No issues.

1.875" American Racing Headers. No starter replacements but I did have the headers and X pipe coated.

What do you mean by starter issues? What is the car doing?

The starter solenoid overheats and then fails. Some even melt the posts out. The car will not crank. Most people just combat the problem by shielding the starter.

Kooks headers, 105,000 miles on them without any issues with the unprotected starter.

Zero starter issues. Still OEM stater. Had LG 1 7/8" and ARH 2" on the car. Unprotected starter, no issues at all.

AZDave47 , did you have your Pfadt's and your tunnel covers installed at the same time ?

User Omega hinted what might be closer to the cause of my periodic starter problems.

Yes they went in when I had my HCIE work done, including DeWitts and McLeod RXT 1000 clutch.

Starter #5 here. I'm suspecting there is more of an issue than the heat. For some reason my car seems to have crazy under hood temperatures. Something is causing it to get hotter than I ever remember. I know for a fact I have no exhaust leaks to begin with. Ive checked everything over. Couple months ago I wrapped a portion of my headers (the area thats the closest to the starter) and the starter wires, and the car does not have nearly as much of a starting issue, unless its very hot out and its a hot start. I suspect the issue is more within the wiring. My car has had 1 7/8 Kooks and for the first 65k miles it started right up, every single time, not a single issue, than couple thousand miles later (within 6k) miles I've replaced 4 starters. 3 oem/reman and 1 MSD. My theory is the factory heat shielding on the starter wires deteriorated and went out, I know it did for me anyhow, and then after the car gets some heat in it, i.e driving in traffic, it would have so much resistance in the wires that it kills the solenoids in the starters. Thats my opinion on it, only other possible thing is something causing the car to generate so much heat that its wreaking the wiring and taking out the starters. Anyway thats what ended up "fixing it" for me. I dont know how long this one is going to last for, but I suspect its not forever. FWIW I have compared the tables of the stock tune and my current tune in HPT and nothing related to starting has been altered, no timing, no fueling, cranking, or anything else was altered. But the car is definitely very very hot under the hood now.
