Faulty lifter ate the camshaft
Guess I'm joining the not so wonderful club of bad lifters and ruined camshafts.
I've got a really good mechanic taking a look at it right now, has built hundreds of race cars and works on Chevy and LS motors all the time.
Is there anything I can relay to him that might help?
He seems to think that the whole motor and a bunch of other things will need to come out and will cost at least a few thousand $$$$ to do the job, and multiple weeks of effort.
Also, are there newer/better replacement parts out there so I can avoid having this event occurring twice?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Melting Slicks
If there is debris in the motor, yup, motor is coming out to clean it all out. Hopefully it didnt eat bearings, crank, rods, etc...
Until you know WHAT happened, hard to recommend replacement parts that "might" be better.

Factory? Aftermarket? Stock cam?
All of them have seen failures. Go with a good proven setup. The new johnson lifters are nice.

Not enough info for anyone to help with a hunch for a diagnosis
bad lifters and ruined camshafts
Happens, does not mea the rest of the motor needs pulled.
What was oil pressure ???? oil pressure low, might be pulling everything.
How many mils and what year? 13? ya everythings out

Oil pressure was fine. Car drove fine but it occasionally misfired at idle and would throw a check engine light for cylinder 2 misfire.

Its going to be a chicken/egg thing. Cam could kill lifter, or lifter can kill cam. Also could be cam gear backing out. Seen all 3 take out a lifter.

...or poor valvetrain dynamics beating up the lifter.

Process is taking valve covers off and inspecting.
Guy last weak thought what you did and it was just a busted spring, they used a bore scop and found the piston was in perfect shape, new spring and the guy was down the road.
If it is a lifter heads come off for lifter/cam exam.

The OEM .700" lifter wheel and 1.8 RR are not what I considee a good match. I'm a broken record at this point...... I do not like GMs .700" roller wheel. Not saying that is what happened here, but it doesn't help.
If the cam lobe is gone, an engine tear down is highly recommended.
