Default Rat 540 Oil Blog / New Update on M1 5W 30 and 0W 40 European Formula

Not sure how many of you follow this blog from Rat 540 but I check in on it every 6 months or so, and he has some new finding on the new M1 5W 30 and amazing results on the 0W 40 "FS" European Formula.

https://540ratblog.wordpress.com/

Check out #3 and #7, if you haven't seen this blog before read the whole thing so you can read his resume and how he conducts his tests.

My question is for those running the 0W 40, it states it is not GM Dexon 1 approved, what does that mean and does it really matter? I live in Houston where it is 90 plus most of the year so I wouldn't mind running this oil since it tests so well.

This is from the M1 website

Specifications and approvals

Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 synthetic motor oil meets or exceeds the requirements of:
•API SN, SM, SL, SJ
•ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4

Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 has the following builder approvals:
•MB-Approval 229.3
•MB-Approval 229.5
•VW 502 00/505 00
•PORSCHE A40

According to ExxonMobil, Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 is of the following quality:
•API CF
•VW 503 01

M1 0W-40 is not Dexos approved because it has to much Zinc and phosphorus to pass the Dexos test. GM went with the Dexos lower zinc oil to make it easier for the cats to last the required EPA miles/years. Several European manufactures still recommend M1 0W-40 and their cats need to meat the same EPA durability standards.

What does it mean to you? If you have an engine failure and GM tests your oil and finds it non-compliant, they may reject your warranty claim, just as they reject an out of warranty 5K miles 6 year old Z06 claim. That said, usually they do not test the oil, so I've heard.

And again:

Do you want to make the EPA happy?

Do you want to make the GM Cat warranty bean counters happy?

Do you want really good oil?

Pick one

With a new cam, headers and heads the warranty is no longer an issue. I just want to know if it is worth running in a non track car or just stick with the 5w 30

Use M1 0W-40, it's better for your hardware. You will see some increase in your oil pressure under most conditions, 5 to 10 psi.

Here's info on the different formulations of Mobil 1. More phosphorus and zinc in 0w-40 than some others. Link to the website:

VertC6 - great post and thanks for sharing that link.

The most informative post I have ever read about motor oil. It answers just about every question about oil I have ever thought of and more.

It's great to see actual testing rather than a bunch of Internet 'experts' speculation.

Interesting to read that the infamous Higher the Zinc Level the Better Myth has been busted!!

I did not know there was a new 0-40 M1 formula. I sent 540 a few quarts of oil to test a couple years ago, the M1 0-40 being one of them. It didn't fair as well as the 5-30 at normal temps, but did perform much better at higher temps. Good to know about the new FS. Should be a no-brainer to use it.

I wanted to experiment with the 0-40 and high speed/rpm hydraulic lifters that I'm using, to see how well they perform. I used the M1 euro 0-40 all last season, and I could not detect any issues, at any rpm (stopped at 7500).

The drag is poor old M1 15w-50 is still taking it on the chin in his tests. I used a 50/50 mix of 0w-40 and 15w-50 last time, maybe I'll stick with just 0w-40.

Better oil pressure here after I changed over.

I run 0-40w Mobile 1 in my STi as well as the x3 with m54b30. German castrol would easily burn a quart in the beamer by 5k miles. 0-40w doesnt burn a drop.

In north carolina we see temps in the 90's plus rush hour traffic so its great protection when you throw a turbo in the mix.

So far I love this oil, as with my discount it comes to 40 bucks for filter and a six pack.

I've been chatting with Rat 540 and if you are running on the street with your temps always below 230 you definitely want to stick with the 5W 30, but if you often go above that then you want 0W 40.

He also strongly recommends the #13 Quarter State in the gold bottle, at 270 degrees it still maintains it's high temp viscosity.
