I have a 2009 Corvette. What is the black box that is on the right side of the inside rearview mirror?

Why is it not on all cars? Or is it, but not so obviously placed.

OnStar antenna.

OnStar, XM radio, and auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass became standard in model year 2008.

My wife thought it was a place to store sunglasses when she first rode in the Z. Had to tell her to stop messin' with it trying to open it. Told her it was a plutonium reverse polarity modulator standard on the Z06 and was not to be trifled with or it would upset the cars equilibrium.
