Default Optimal Cruising RPMs

For everyday driving, what is the best RPMs to cruise at? I've noticed that if the RPMs are below approx 2,000, there is a deeper sound from the motor. Is that normal? This is my 4th Vette, but my first Z and first manual tranny. I would appreciate any input on this. Thanks in advance!

That noise is called exhaust drone, and it drives many of us nuts!

There isnt a preferred cruising RPM without qualifying a ton of other variables. But the engine has no problem rolling along at 1300-1500 so long as you arent requesting tons of load.

If I'm cruising around town on 45-55 mph streets I'll usually only go to 5th gear and leave it there. I only put it in 6th if I'm on the freeway over 65 mph

Thanks for the responses. If you get a chance, I like to know more about exhaust drone. Is there a thread or anything I could read up on this topic?

Thousands upon thousands. Do a search for "drone". Get a 12 pack, sit back, and do some reading....lol. I don't really think anybody pays attention to a "rpm" cruising range. Most folks probably pay more attention to the "mph" range, to keep the LEO away. Cruising speed depends on what the black and white "SPEED LIMIT" signs say.

Whatever 6th gear lands me on near the speed limit. If I have to give more than ~25% throttle to maintain speed (hill) or I need to pass, I down shift.

If your car still has the stock bi-mode exhaust system, that means you have two vacuum controlled valves just in front of the tailpipes (after the muffler cans) that keeps two of your four tailpipes closed sub-3000 rpms. Above ~3000 rpms, the system opens valves, and you have 4 tailpipes breathing...and subsequently, more sound.

If you want to learn more about drone; instead of reading, pull this fuse from the fuse box concealed in the passenger foot well https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...post1594399820

Take the car for a decent drive (city and highway) after you've pulled the fuse...you'll know everything you've ever wanted to know about drone.

I cruise the highways with the cruise control set at 80mph, in 6th gear running about 1800RPM. Anything less than 65MPH, it's in 5th gear

Oh no, this is going to be a stupid question but: does the 2007 Z06 come with cruise control? I just bought my 2007 recently and haven't seen anything where it says cruise control so I just assumed it didn't come with it. Am I missing something?

I've had this car for almost 2 months and never saw that. I'm so used to seeing an actual button that says CRUISE that when I didn't see it, I just assumed the Z06 did not have it

How old are you? GM has been putting the cruise control there since the 70's

If I pull the fuse and drive it, can it do any long term damage to the vehicle? I'm super curious to know what happens!

Nope, none whatsoever...many on here drive that like 100% of the time. You can also install a "Mild to Wild" (M2W) device to control it with the tap of a button, flip of a switch, etc. That way you can keep open 100% of the time, or return to stock without having to access the fuse panel.

I have the "Old School" M2W switch, but I run the B&B Fusion exhaust, that functions exactly like the stock mufflers (valves), but has more of a muscle car sound as compared to the OE exhaust. I typically keep the valves open, except when my wife complains...

I strongly advise you to read some forum threads. Just pick one and read it until the end. Lots and lots of information to be had, one just has to read a little. To answer your question...no damage is done. The valves just stay open instead of closing and opening under wot (wide open throttle), actually I think its 3400 rpm's. It just makes more noise all the time instead of some time. Hundreds and hundreds of threads on it.

I like keeping the motor at 2000--2200 rpms for cruising...
