It doesn't bother me one bit, as the ZR1 guys don't post much anyhow and really never did. The majority of the posts in that section for a long time have been vendor posts, member for sale ads and re-hashed builds of cars that aren't even driven. There might be one new worthwhile post a day, and one new worthwhile thread a week. I actually wished they posted more as I love the car.

It appears some of you did not read the sticky threads that were posted for about three weeks, asking for suggestions and feedback on the merger of the C6 ZO6 and ZR1 sections, so I’ll be glad to run back through the reason it was considered and then implemented.

We understand that some of you would like to have a separate section for each model Corvette in each generation. The software is capable of having an infinite number of sections. We could do one for each model, each year and each color Corvette.

There are good reasons for not doing so, however. Imagine how difficult it would be to find what you were looking for and how long the directory for the site would be. The thing we are most sensitive to relates to traffic in a section because observation shows that a section which doesn’t get much traffic becomes static and people stop checking static sections because they assume there will be nothing new there to see.

The C6 ZR1 section had become an example of a lightly used section, making it vulnerable to being overwhelmed by vendor sales threads. By combining the ZR1 section with the more active Z06 section, the expectation was that the section would be improved by increased activity, particularly from ZR1 enthusiasts, in a section that had a more reasonable percentage of vendor sales threads.

Presumably, the merger of the two sections creates more active threads in a section that is less likely to be overwhelmed by sale threads.

When I checked a few minutes ago, there were 67 threads on the first page of a two-day director in the combined Z06-ZR1 section. Eighteen of the threads were related to ZR1s (27 percent), 43 were Z06 threads (64 percent) and 6 were generic (9 percent).

Why isn’t the software set to require selecting a Z06 or ZR1 prefix? Because some threads may apply to either. If you spot a thread without a prefix that should have one, just report it to a moderator so they can fix it.

Thirteen of the threads on the first page of the two-day directory were vendor sales threads (19 percent). We were starting to see much higher percentages in the ZR1 section because there wasn’t enough activity to push sales threads off the first directory page for a full 48 hours.

Why not just relegate vendors to posting only in the Vendor For Sale sections? Historically, Corvetteforum has allowed vendors to post sales threads in all generational discussion sections. It gives them the exposure they need to sell products. We want them to sell products so they will be there when we need them for new products and services or we have questions or problems related to completed purchases.

When we started seeing vendor sales threads overwhelming some sections, we began limiting vendors on the number of sales threads they could have on the first page of a two-day directory. The current limitation prohibits a vendor from having more than one sale thread on the first page of a two-day directory in any of the discussion sections.

At the same time, we set up the Vendor For Sale sections, where vendors would not be so restricted in the number of sales threads they could post.

When moderators spot excessive sales threads in a section or site users report excessive sales threads, we move them to the Vendor For Sale sections.

Why don’t we prohibit vendors from posting sales threads anywhere except the Vendor For Sale sections? Several of the vendors have experimented with posting just in the Vendor For Sale sections and say their sales fall off significantly if they shift sales ads from the discussion sections to the Vendor For Sale sections. We may eventually get to the point where that changes and site users will go to the Vendor For Sale sections, but for now you are buying products and services when they are posted in the discussion sections, not so much in the Vendor For Sale sections.

We ended up with a proliferation of sticky threads when the Z06 and ZR1 sections were merged. We noticed some of them had not been posted to for more than a year and removed the “sticky” from them, but there still are too many, meaning you have to scroll down past all of the sticky threads to find newly posted threads.

I think the solution to the dilemma will be to create a ZR1 links thread and a Z06 links thread, making those sticky and using them to link to the threads that now are sticky. If you have alternate suggestions, let me know via PM or email.

Why do we ask for questions, suggestions and complaints to come via PMs and emails, rather than in open threads? It’s in the site rules:

Someone posted that they no longer are able to search the section for just ZR1 or Z06 threads. Actually, you can. Just use the function at the top of the section to sort by Z06 or ZR1 or to include both. You also can use the “search” pull-down menu to do an “advanced search” which gives you the option of selecting thread prefixes such as ZR1 or Z06 in your search parameters.
