Default ZR1 side skirt style question

to those of you that have purchased a set of reproduction side skirts,
do you have to drill any holes in body panels? the one's I'am looking at do not come with directions or hardware. if so what kind of fasteners are required? Tks.

About 12 holes in each side and fasten with rivets. Not hard but it does make you a little sick to drill the first hole , after the first couple it's smooth sailing. Just take your time and make sure they are lined up just how you want before you start drilling.

Ouch, do you think 3M high bound tape will work? I see it is used on the rear ZR1 rear spoiler. also what size pop rivets did you use?

I suppose it would hold for a bit, But I think it would give way eventually. There are only 2 points that it mounts using factory screws one on the front and one on the back so the whole span of the skirt would be relying on the tape, and if the tape gave up at speed I would bet the skirt would end up trashed. I was hesitant at first on drilling holes as well, looking back I would not do it any other way. I used 3/16 rivets, a helping hand would have made it a lot easier but it still wasn't bad.

Yes. Same here with C7 carbon side skirts. had 2 holes that lined up with factory holes. Had to drill the rest out. I did not rivet them on. I pre-drilled, and used self tapping hex head screws.

Just a bit of advice.....the screws will probably not hold them on for more than a few months or so. I did the same thing and over time the screws ultimately pulled out...presumably because of the amount of flex and pressure applied to the skirts over time.

I pulled mine off and will rivet, or use rivnuts, to attach them when I get back around to it, which will allows me to remove the skirts when needed.

I had them on for about 2 years. No issues for me. And all screws were tight when I removed them. But you do bring up a valid point. I did check the screws a couple times each year just to verify they were snug. Never found any loose, but it could happen.

I like the idea of rivnuts. do you have to buy a special tool? and thanks all you guys for your reply's . I'am a Mid Year guy and just recently acquired a Zo6 with mods. awesome car!

I believe you have to have a notch to prevent rotation of the rivnut, which may be somewhat of a challenge in the fiberglass. They do require a special tool, very commonly used in aviation.

Rivnets would be great. The ones I have used did not require a notch. I actually bought a rivnut kit at Harbor Freight. It had the tool, and 10 of a few common sized rivnuts. They also had bulk rivnuts too. Very easy to install. Used them to install a light bar on roof of my Jeep.

Yes, a special tool is required, but I bought mine from Harbor Freight which was very inexpensive...made even better with their recent 25% off deal

The kit comes with a number of sizes and I'll order more in bulk from Amazon when I get ready to re-install.

Factory rivets work well, but are pricey (over $3 a rivet). Here are a couple of better sources to buy the exact same rivets in bulk.

I decided to go with this method. I wanted the skirt to fit as flush to the body as possible and the rivnut has a collar against the body thus a small gap. 1 side done 1 to go Tks

I used a nutsert tool. After having to take the skirts off a few times now to repaint them from minor rock damage the holes in the fiberglass started to strip out. I used a Astro Pneumatic Tool 1442 Nut/Thread Setting Hand Riveter Kit, 13-Inch kit which I bought from amazon for around $70.
