Default Smoke then trans fluid leak

Are there any common issues that would cause a diff fluid leak at the rear end? Today after a pull I saw smoke out back. After parking, a friend noticed reddish specks on the rear bumper. Looking under the car he saw diff fluid leaking and dripping from the middle of the car and also off the rear sway bar. Any ideas what I might have broken? Of course I'm going to have the car looked at but the curiosity is killing me. It also would be nice to have some idea of what's wrong so Im prepared when talking to the shop.

Pretty sure the axle seals are a common leak point. Oil on exhaust is likely the culprit for the smoke.

Trans fluid is red. Diff fluid is tan. You have a diff cooler mounted to the left of the diff which is cooled by trans fluid. One of those connections could be leaking.

That would be awesome if that's all it is. It does drive perfectly fine. I still got it towed back home though.

Maybe? Can't get up there to see if this is tight just yet. Getting ramps from a friend to drive up on to, hopefully in the next day or two. The actual trans fill plug that's just above this looks dry.

No such luck guys. Somehow I managed to blast a hole out of the bottom of the bell housing.

It'll probably be a while before I find out for sure. I'll take the car to RPM in the late Winter / Spring when I have some loot. I'll update the thread when I do.

That hole belongs there, it's to tell you that the rear seal in the trans is leaking.

If you feel like tinkering, I'd check the connections and tubes for the diff cooler. The cooler is on the right/bottom of the picture. I'd carefully inspect each of the hard lines running to/from it on both sites of it. Red fluid will be in the 2 lines you can see, and tan/brown in the lines you can't see in this picture.
