Had a brief but LOUD squeal on first startup after oil change. What was it?
Let my oil drip out for over 24 hours (didn't have time to finish it, so I left it up on stands).
I put in 9 quarts of oil and started it up (to let it flow before adding the final 1.5).
When I first started it, there was a very loud squeal. Almost sounded like a belt, but way louder and higher pitched. It went away after about 5 seconds.
My wife even ran outside to make sure things were OK, that's how loud it was.
My first thought was that it was the engine running dry, or maybe air flowing through the system. I'm not entirely sure. I read somewhere that it might have been because I didn't oil the filter gasket before twisting it on.
Any ideas?

Cam lobe / lifter failure, it is a high-pitched squeal.
OP, 5 seconds is a long time when you are looking at your watch counting it down.. Was it 5 or 1.5?

Hmm.. I don’t think it was a cam/lifter failure. It was probably in the range of 3-5 seconds, but it hasn’t come back. When it went away, it was almost as if something sealed up or kicked into place. It had never made that noise before and the only variable changed was an oil/filter swap. I’ll let you know if it comes back!
