If you put them on backwards you block the coolant passages from the block to the head, then you get no water flow.

That makes perfect sense, but the part I have trouble with is "pulled the water pump and stuck my fingers in the coolant passages and felt it". If the tab was on the wrong end of the head, why would you need to pull the pump and what does that have to do with the coolant passages behind the water pump? As usual, I'm missing something???

And what has happened to the studs on the block or an asymmetrical bolt pattern that would prevent that from happening? Another brilliant engineering feat...

The passages right behind the water pump go right up into the head. So if he pulled it, stuck his finger in there, and felt the head gasket, then it would be obvious the head gasket is blocking the passage.

cometic head gaskets have a left and right unlike oem which just say front, you can put the left on the right and vice versa, everythkng will line up perfect except for the coolant passage, i ended up pulling both heads and switching them around, a big lesson learnt !
if you look at the top right corner of the head ypu can see the gasket is blocking the passage
good news is car is back up and running great, had no issues this time bleading the cooling system and will hopefully be on the dyno tommorow!

Looking forward to seeing what it makes. Good job on figuring out the issue.
