Default MSD intake (things to look for) USED

Hello... As some know I recently purchased a "slightly" used MSD intake from a forum member. To be clear, I do not fault him for this as I do not know if he opened it up.

Outside, its in great condition. Inside I found the following w the help of my "build" guy.. We opened it up and came across this.
1) 5 torn injector "pulse" gaskets. Upon further investigation you can see where my finget is a small "lip" on the bottom of the intake whereas the top shell is smooth.. Grinding this down "should" assist in sealing better and not tearing while mounting top to bottom shell.
2) RTV on intake gaskets
3) different colored, sized "O" rings
4) gasket pinched where TB mounts.
5) "some" bolts lock tighted, some not.

Good thing that i didn't just try to bolt up and go....
That would not have been good. Glad that i decided to have it ported, shaved, painted, otherwise i would have been trippin.

Just sharing information to assist someone else who may be considering a "used" MSD intake.

Thank you! I am in the middle deciding on a used one. I may just go with the new in box one I found.

Also, do you have to replace any gaskets after you crack it open? I am going to port it myself.

(Pretty much clean it up and no, nothing crazy like Mamo).

nah, only if it looks like mine. Yeah. the guy porting mine showed me what needs to be smoothed down and why.. Made total sense. Like you, mine wont be Mamofied... BUT it should get the job done for a fraction of the price.

Yea someone butchered those gaskets and o-rings. It's usually due to overtightening the bolts or being careless. MSD also changed some of the gaskets at one point. I have my manifold off pretty regularly and the only gaskets I've had to replace are the o-rings that are used with the bolts that go into the head. I bought a pack of viton o-rings from Amazon and keep them handy when I take off the manifold.

Matt, if I’m stepping on your toes with this and I’ll remove it if ya like.

but what have you guys done to paint your MSD? What steps and products do I need to do it myself? Can I have atomic orange mixed into an aerosol can?

Basically just sending off the top shell to be podercoated, not painted. Will be removing MSD lettering and the little ridge on the intake itself. I'll post pics once complete and let you know exactly how we did it.

I am getting it all done at a great price... shaving, porting, painting (powder coating) for < $500

Great advise Anthony.
I too will order some extras.. As I said, some of the o rings were different colors, some bolts were Lock tighted and some not. I am assuming this guys was chasing a leak and got tired of dicking with it. Either way, I feel as though I got a good deal. $850 shipped, sold my FAST for $800 will spend around $475 for the porting, shaving, painting and most important the POWER I should net. At this point I feel as though I got a good deal. We should know something by next weekend.

That is not bad, I would rather use the $250 elsewhere. Many people say porting it is worth it and some do not. Mamo quoted me $675 and that is too steep for me to be worth it.

Ok cool deal. Most plastic intakes that are aftermarket has extra plastic everywhere from being made that upsets airflow. Guys with 5.0’s would have their Cobra Jet Manifolds ported for $150 and clean out all the extra crap and make another 15 rwhp. I figured a clean up port like that should be good for something and definitely get the job done!

Sweet, now I know where to grab some.

$850 shipped is what I am looking at as well roughly BNIB. There was a used one for $700 but I missed it. $475 for all of that is a good deal! I could care less about shaving it or painting it, I will be skipping those parts. I am ready to see your results!

Here is the O-Rings I use on the manifold bolts that go into the head. 50 for $10. Work fine.

Personally would not want the hassle. Happy with the gains on my Faster proms ported LS7. Good luck Matty!

It has the black manifold gaskets for the heads... I am confident in my guy that the end result will be a sealed intake. He is familiar with them and their shortcomings from the factory.

You absolutely should with your Texas mile (etc) usage. Only knock on those is that they can cause surge, but that should be easily fixed by Carlos in the tune.

I got a surprise when I purchased a used FAST intake many years ago. The guy had glued the shells together with RTV and failed to disclose it. By the time I bought the missing gaskets and bolts, I was close enough to the price of a new one that it make the deal regrettable. Looks like yours will clean up fine. Hopefully the replacement parts aren't too expensive.
