Price Check: 2009 Z06 with 110k miles
Hi all,
I'm in the market for a 2009-2013 black Z06. I was originally expecting and willing to pay anywhere from high 30's to low 40's for a nice, low mileage example... Then I came across a 2009 black Z06 with 110k miles. The seller is asking for $27k.
I looked up the carfax and it had 4 previous owners - the first one put the bulk of the miles on it. The 2nd owner owned it for a month on a loan before selling it, which I found weird. The last two owners owned the car for about 1.5 years each before selling, after each putting about ~15k miles on it.
The Carfax looks good, with regular oil changes and servicing every ~3k miles. I did note the electrical harness got recently installed. I also noticed the steering/suspension was checked a few times, though I'm not sure if that's standard procedure or not.
What does everyone think? I planned to replace all the bushings and suspension anyway on whatever car I get, so those wear items don't seem like a problem to me.
Any red flags? Any idea how much life the motor could have left in it (I realize that's heavily dependent on how it was driven).

Have the heads been fixed? I'm not sure I would want to pay $27K for a Z06 with over 100K on the ODO and still have to fix the heads and whatever else needs addressed, maybe tires? You may easily be in the mid $30K after fixing things up. I would consider it if my intention was to just track it. I personally like your first option of looking for a lower mile for high 30's to low 40's, there are plenty out there worth getting the heads addressed. I paid $36.7K last year for a 08Z with 23K on the ODO. I did the head swap using AHP for around $1500. If you really plan to keep for a while I would go mid $30's garage queen. IMO

Thanks for the response. Heads haven't been fixed. Regarding rubber, I have a fresh set of Z06 sized Michelin PSS sitting around so that won't be an issue for me. Other than axle nuts and bushings/suspension which I'll be replacing anyway, I can't think of any wear items that'll need special consideration (other than redoing the heads, of course).
Car will be lightly tracked maybe once or twice a month during summer. Other than that it'll sit in my garage and only come out for the weekends.
One of my friends had a bearing failure on his garage queen 2008 Z06 with 20k miles and since then I've been a tad paranoid about paying full price for a Z, whereas with this car I figure if I need to replace the motor ($17k parts and labor) I won't be that worse off compared to a low mileage example.
I guess my main question is, is it the exception or norm for these motors and trannies to be reliable around this age? And are there any wear items I haven't taken into consideration?

That would depend upon your taste in women, er cars. My preference would be for a lower mileage example.
Here's a 2006 with only 64 miles on it for $41k.

3.5k miles on this 2011 for $49k.

24k miles 2011 3LZ with Nav for $45k

If its me, I don't want anything that high in mileage. Heads would be addressed immediately, but my thoughts then turn clutch and trans (synchros mainly). Engine should still have life left in it if its been serviced regularly. Heads, clutch, hydraulics, and a trans refresh...might as well have bought something newer, but opinions may vary.

I ran some calculations - I could do a clutch replacement for $2k (parts/labor) and a trans refresh/upgrade for $3k (parts/labor) and a caliper rebuild for $1k, putting me at $27k + $6k = $33k for a car that has a fresh tranny, clutch, and hydraulics... with 110k miles on the motor. The $4k cost for heads/rockers is something I'd factor into for any C6Z purchase, so I won't include that into this price. Anyhow, at that point the only worry item would be the motor. Though since the heads will be done, I doubt any failures would be catastrophic (like holes in the block) so I imagine you could get a rebuild done for $10k parts/labor and have a fresh motor at that point. All in all you'd end up with a relatively new C6Z for $43k.
Thanks, only looking for an 09-13 C6Z though. I used to have an '08 and I hated the slow 17:1 steering rack ratio - I kept banging my hands into my knees when taking turns at the track. The 09+ models have a variable ratio rack that goes from 17:1 on-center to 14:1 at lock which is fairly quick.

Pass. That’s way too much mileage. I paid $28k flat for mine with 33.5k miles. 06Z06
dont those years have connecting rod issues or are very prone?

$23k, 24k max.
It needs heads done for sure, trans/clutch may need refresh etc.
The c6 platform handles miles really well. I'd not be concerned with 'easy' miles as long as they were easy miles! not 100k of track miles!

Melting Slicks
If the miles are highway miles, 110k isn't crazy. Just check the engine out for compression, leak down, oil sample to a lab, get the heads fixed. Could be a good value. $27k is a bit much. $25k with those miles would be in the ballpark.

Think about what youre saying.... 110K miles for $27K... + all of the additional monies you are looking to add... If my math is correct you are upwards of $32K.... maybe more. Why not keep an eye open on CL, Ebay, here on the forum for a lower mileage sub $32K car without the wear, tear on that 100K mi car... IF the asking price was $25K and negotiable then that is altogether a different story. I'd pass... But that's just me.

Correction: it wasn't $10k more. It is $4k more and it looks ready to rock.
This is a smoking deal:

i made the mistake of saving money and buying a stock z06 for $26k. 06 with 88k. Thought it was a smoking deal. After what I'm doing, a $35k z with the basics done would have been the way to go. And it wouldn't have spent the last 3 months on the lift while I try to find time and parts to build it.
