I know some wise azz will say sounds ready to blow, so let me be first.

Hmm, sounds bad, ready to blow.

There.

sounds normal to me. You want some ears if the guides are bad?

the engine/ heads

Sounds ok to me, but what do I know. Although I do have experience with what a bad lifter sounds like, don't ask me how.

Is there a particular sound or concern here that we're trying to diagnose?

He's hoping we can ether say it sounds good and its not going to drop a valve or yes it sounds bad and is getting ready to blow. Sounds to me like a normal LS engine too.

The truth is Froggy47 all of the ones I have read about blowing is there was no warning sign or noise before it dropped a valve. If you are this concern and reaching out you just need to get it fixed, if for nothing more than piece of mind.

By your avatar you live close or near AHP (by my standard's cause I live in TX). Ether get some heads from them or let them fix it.

I will tell you this me and 03BlkZ just checked the valve guide wear on the heads he pulled off his 15,000 mile Z and found all but 2-3 valves had some wiggle and of those I would say 3 or 4 were out of specs. this was both intake and exhaust.

Sounds like a normal LS7 sewing machine to me. Mine sounds much quieter since I had the heads done/replaced.

It's been scientifically proven (yes, I went there..) that you can not determine valve guide clearances with the valve covers on and the engine running.

Are you annoyed that you need to pull the valve covers on a perfectly good, low mileage high-end vehicle? Of course you are.

If you don't check, ignore the issue as "Internet hype", will you live to regret that decision? Quite possibly.

this one has less than 6K miles clean as a whistle no cam either. Mostly stock if I remember.

I don’t like to use this man as a example as he was going to fix the heads and he actually talked to Kohle at AHP prior. It dropped before he purchased the corrected parts. Very unfortunate and I post his story because the problem is very real. I was not a believer and popped my valve covers to discover all my intakes were severely loose and some exhaust guides. I would not risk it. 2-3k now or 14k for a new engine plus labor. Or worse a repaired engine with repaired heads. I parked mine and ordered the parts to correct the issue from AHP. I couldn’t pass up their porting and MS90 guides. Their customer service is hands down by far best, very nice people and they push hard to meet deadlines. Best of luck

It is really disheartening that GM has blown this off, jerks.

Sounds pretty typical to me. Can you hear it when you are inside the car and running say, 30 mph at around 1.5 to 2.5K rpms?

Other forum members have just run thicker oil if the noise bothers you. That seeems to significantly reduce the noise. Check this out here where extra viscosity of oil quieted the valvetrain in many of the members' rides.

Also, have you had the heads addressed? What is your setup?

TSP advertises that their proprietary cam lobe profiles help maximize valvetrain stability and drastically reduces typical LS sewing machine noise. This actually became the deciding factor for me in deciding to swap cams when I had my heads off, I wanted to see how smooth and durable I could get the valvetrain.

Between the better LS lobes, the Johnson SLR lifters, CHE trunnion, PSI springs, and the Moldstar 90 guides, the LS sewing machine noise is virtually all but gone on my motor.

Normal sound of LS7, but mine is quieter after getting heads fixed by AHP. It still has sewing machine noise but less than it did.

I kept my old heads to eventually build a LS7 for my 69 Camaro. With 12k miles all the intakes were out of spec. I checked only a few exhaust and a couple were in spec and a few were just out of spec, nothing way out like intakes.

I know it sucks to buy a car and then spend extra on heads that should be repaired by GM. Hey, life is not fair. I sucked it up, got the best fix I could based on my knowledge and budget.

Thanks, nothing on heads yet. I really do not have an engine sound concern, just getting a baseline.

Here's a video of my idle I did yesterday for comparison purposes. AHP heads done last August, otherwise stock. This was on a cold startup and I had just backed it out of the garage, so it had been running like one minute.
