Yes, But that results in loosing grip and not tires coming apart.

I started HPDE in 2009. Started instructing several years later and now in my fifth year. If I counted the sets of tires I have worn out on the track, I would bet on 7 sets.

This is my point. They have some value.

The thread stared out by asking do these tires have any value. NOT should I use these tires at an HPDE event and drive at speeds over 150 MPH.

I have been at 55 HPDE events that totaled 89 track days. Have heard of only 2 tires that came apart on the track. VIR and one at CMS. Both tires were Hoosiers. Not sure of the date codes and not sure if they were properly stored over the winter months.

The tires change over time, no doubt about that. Question is, how much and how fast? It will depend on the environment and the compounds used in the tires.

Personally, I wouldn't get all alarmed about tires that are 5-6 years old. 20 years old, I would be concerned.

But yes, they definitely have some value. I would use them, if I got them cheap. I would just be aware and not drive on them at high speeds.

I am a former Tire Engineer and Compounder at Dunlop.

None taken.

You were looking for our experiences/opinions. Every now and then there are folks who go after someone and say personal comments w/o really knowing what the facts are about that person.

You were looking for information and hope we gave you something to think about.

You kept it real!!!

Heard from LV Vette. All is Cool. Missed opportunity mostly thanks to the Trolls quick and unqualified responses. Others responded with well thought out answers. Time to move on.

I went to a tyre shop and asked the same question. They could have said no you need new tyres your 6yr old ones are gone. But instead they said they are fine.

sounds like they could personally care less and probably donít since they arenít liable.
My car has the original tires from Ď06 (replacing next month) and I can say theyíre like ice skates-not even exaggerating. Also having been an auto tech at a couple shops most guys donít notice the date code on the tires since most pay attention to the tread depth.

Everyone cares about making a buck. I have 6yr old Michelin Pilot and with 580rwhp and they grip fine once warmed up.
