Default [VR] Vengeance Built Twin Turbo C6Z06 runs 8's in the 1/4 and 200+ in the 1/2!!!!

This is a story about a man, a car, and a HUGE passion for going fast. Our customer Drue Macready has been a customer of ours since 2014 when he originally came to us with a 2007 Corvette Z06 with heads, cam and a centrifugal supercharger. Drue’s goal on his first arrival to us was to push his current combination a little further for fun on the street while also being able to use it at some of the local ½ mile events that were getting very popular at that time. After correcting and tuning his Z06 in the current state we began discussing additional modifications to maximize the current combination on the vehicle. Within the next few months we added an AlkyControl dual nozzle methanol kit as well as an LG Motorsports 15” conversion kit to fit the 15x10 Weld S77 wheels and drag radials. This helped Drue achieve his current goals, but the longer he hung around our shop and customers his vision quickly changed and grew into the dream vehicle that he owns today.

Around this time we had just complete the next phase of Randy Hunter’s Twin Turbo C6 Z06 aka “FATMAN”. After watching Fatman take home the corvette half mile record at 204.5mph Drue decided he wanted to join these rankings and put together a similar twin-turbo based combination to also hit the 200mph mark. We came up with an excellent combination that would push Drue past his goal and well past 1000rwhp and into the 200’s. The basic essentials of this build include:

· LME 427ci LSX Shortblock

· Vengeance Racing Spec Solid Roller Valvetrain

· MAST LS7 Cylinder Heads

· Custom VR Air to Water Intercooler System

· Twin Precision Gen II 6870 Turbochargers

· Custom Turbo Manifolds

· 4” Custom Exhaust

· ProEFI 128 ECU Engine Management

· Vengeance Racing Custom Spec Fuel System

To withstand the amount of power we were getting ready to lay down we decided to ditch the OEM LS7 and went with an LSX based 427 shortblock with a custom solid roller camshaft and MAST 285cc LS7 cylinder heads. This combination could achieve great power even in N/A form, but more importantly would be the perfect match for the turbo system that would mate to it. Being that this was a full custom one off turbo setup, our shop foreman and master fabricator Jey Clegg fabricated turbo manifolds to hang the turbos low near the bellhousing similar to the “Fatman” setup that we had developed previously. One of Drue’s goals during this phase of the build was to also have a full 4” exhaust system that would exit at the rear of the car. Although not an easy task at all, we made it happen and came out looking amazing! After the intercooler system was built, we removed everything to send out for coating before the final install. The hotside received Jet Hot’s Extreme coating while the cold side was sent out of state to be done in full black chrome plating, including the intake elbow for a very custom and unique look!

The last thing to finalize on the build was engine management, which was installed and tuned here in house by Jey as well. The ProEFI ECU would give us unlimited engine control, advanced traction control, and most importantly safety features to keep this engine living as long as possible. With this combination through the OEM T56 Transmission, the Z06 laid down 1294rwhp @ 22psi. This was more than enough power to reach his goals, however Drue could never get the car to lay down the number that he was looking for as he was constantly fighting the ability to really put the power down efficiently.

After about a year on this combination, we decided to convert the “Fatman” Z06 that Drue’s car was modeled after to a RPM Transmissions TH400 and 9” drivetrain combination with a Pro-Torque converter which helped us to achieve a 216mph pass in the half mile making a bit more power due to the larger turbos. After seeing this, Drue realized the potential with his car and setup a time immediately to do a similar conversion. With a new look and a TH400 tranny we took this combination out for some testing at WannaGoFAST in Dallas, TX earlier this year. Drue piloted his C6 Z06 to 200.00MPH during its first outing and ran 202 and 205.19 passes later in the day to back it up! The goal was achieved for his ½ mile 200+ number, but knowing now what the true potential of the car was, Drue had us bring the car back in the shop to change around the rear gear for a better suited ¼ mile ratio so we could see how the car would do on the drag strip as well.

We had setup a last-minute tuning session just a few weeks ago at Carolina Dragway with a few other Pro-EFI equipped customers, and Drue was able to make it out shortly after the gear change. Mind you that this car weighs in at 3,720lbs without a driver and was still equipped with a ½-mile spec torque converter and next to no seat time on the driver prior to arriving. Drue started off the night running a high 9-second ET on wastegates to feel out the track right off the trailer, but quickly became confident and started learning the car quickly. Once we started letting him loose with more power Drue ran several 8 second passes with a best of 8.41@167mph and a second 8.4 ET pass to back it up right after! This was done on a 1.399 60’ time and still only a handful of passes under his belt. We have no doubt that with the right converter, less weight, and some more time in testing this can easily be a 7-second reliable street car. We will soon be going to a full 10-point cage in the car as well as looking to pull a few hundred pounds out (car still has A/C, radio, full interior, etc) to get this car where it needs to be shooting for a 210+ number in the ½ mile and a 7-second ET!
