Default New Custom Mechman 250A Alternator Install

Finally got the chance today to install my new Mechman 250A alternator and run the bypass wire. I got the alternator from @BLOWNBLUEZ06@RKT Performance which he gets custom made. The testing tag that came with it tested it at 199 amps at idle and 261 amps at crusing speed. For the bypsss wire I used some OFC 1/0 gauge and copper connectors. Fired her up and I was getting around 14.8 volts at idle. Needless to say, I'm very happy with the results. Much better than the OEM unit that was dipping down into 9 volt range when it got hot. Bret has been great to work with and shipped the unit out the same day I paid for it. Here's some pictures of it installed. Still gotta put some black conduit over the red wire to clean it up.

They work great and Brett's service is fantastic.
The only thing I'd do different is clock it so that the wires don't show so much. But I'm fanatical about stuff like that. LOL

I like how it looks clocked. I really needed it in there to get the car running well. But I may clock it when I take out the bracket to paint it. Did you paint yours yourself?

Wow those look amazing! Curious on the price.

Do you run this to the starter or all the way to the battery? If you’re going to the starter are you also running the 1/0 gauge wire all the way to the battery? I would like to do this in the fall for my next set of fun stuff on the vette.

Lastly, if running a 10 or 25% underdrive pulley, what are the effects on this alternator? I’ve read that the computer may automagically adjust the output of alternators, not sure about the z06, I just haven’t researched this enough.

Thanks!

Interesting. Looking at Mechman's website, you can order it in a few dozen different colors for $25 extra. On Mechman's website, I only see a 240A variant ( B13969240M), is that the same one or is your custom one via RKT the 260A? What sort of mod needs to be done with the one that you put in?

The factory alternator sounds a little weak for 7.0L motor. What would be the best alternator one could get as a factory replacement that looks as close to stock but has more Amps?

I also ordered one from Bret a few months ago. Gorgeous piece and Bret’s customer service is second to none!

What type of mods have been made to the car that require a 250A alternator?

What does "shelled out" mean exactly. I've never had, seen or even ever heard of one bearing or rotor failure and your words make it sound as if it blew apart. The only things I ever see fail are regulators and diodes and Mechman has strived to continually seek out better components. Their repairs are priced very fairly.
I've helped many forum members with their electrical issues after they've reported their alternator not working properly and can say with confidence that while these alternators aren't indestructible, most of the failures are caused by other issues such as a failing battery.
These issues often wont cause a stock alternator to fail because the stock units don't put out half the current of even the 170 models in so many cases. Current flow is what creates heat and is what often causes failure.

My 170 model has been working flawlessly for 3 or 4 years now since I got it. Thanks Brett.

was driving one day and it now doesn't charge the battery i got on it right before it happend. Then all of a sudden it said service charging system. Never had a issue before i cant speak for what is exactly wrong with it because I parked it for winter I'll deal with it come spring but one thing I know is for 500+ I shouldnt have to be fixing or replacing a alternator after 2 year especially for having 2000 miles on it. In my 20 plus years of owning cars this is the first alternator to ever fail on me and actuallty the first part to fail on the z06. I will probly get is rebuilt and give Them 2nd chance but i hope i don't have the same issue down the road. I saw a post on the vette fb page how guys have the same issue. I'll know exactly what happend here pretty soon. Who's to say maybe it was caused by a failing battery but never once had a issue before the day i got on it and i remember the exact spot i got on it cause the service charging system light came on it right after that.

Will you let me help you with it? If you'll text me, I'll do what I can to get this fixed for you. Maybe not free because it's not my call, but I will certainly do what I can. my cell# is nine seven two, 741 74 five seven

I've read on the fb page that guys bought them and had to replace them alot but then again mine only last 2 years. I bought this one for the black finish cause I like the engine bay looking good. If it fails again I will look at other options. Shouldn't fail after 2 years and less than 2000 miles

I completely agree. I was pushed towards a Mechman because people claimed the OEM type alt doesn't push enough amps through it. Truth is, with heat, any alternator will take a crap. Unless you're driving big stereo equipment, the mechman is most likely unnecessary.
