Default Track set up

08 Z06 w/485 RWHP. Not door to door racing, but as close to it as I can get, what is a not too expensive wheel/tire set up? Why do racers go 18's or 19's all 4 corners rather than stock set up?(19's rear. 18"s front) Is there a decent light weight forged wheel w/o breaking the bank? Sounds like Hoosiers are the only way to go for true grip. Considered Pilot Sport Cup 2's or R888R"s for street and a few w/e's at the track but I am way too aggressive on the track, think I would just burn them up.

Wheels that are commonly used for a C6Z are CCW Corsair's 18 x 13 R and 18 x 11 F. You can find them used for around $2,500 per set.

For tires I would use Pirelli scrubs from GT Racing tires. They last longer than Hoosier's typically, are just as fast and are a decent price.

If set on Hoosier's I would run R's if you run most often in warmer weather. For colder track days I would run A's. The operating temp where they are happiest starts much lower than R7's.

For me tires are my biggest consumable expense besides fuel.

As far as the rest of the car it needs a little attention to be reasonably easy to drive at speed comfortably. Tires however do make the most difference in lap times.

Excellent reply.

I run 18" CCW on all 4 corners with r888r tires. The main reason for the 18" wheel set up (I also have CC brakes) is the cost of tires. The OEM 19/20 size is about $800 more for a set when compared to a set of 18" tires. Three sets later, I have recovered the cost of the used set of CCW wheels I bought.

R888R + C5 Z06 wheels are probably the best you can get for the money. I just bought 4 tires for about 230$ each. You can get a set of 18x10.5 (front and rear square) for about 400. Out the door that's less than 1500$

Hoosiers will work well but I don't think they'll last very long. R888R is more worry free, I think better than a Sport Cup 2 (also cheaper)

18's are used for cost and there is little to no performance benefit of running a taller rim beyond a 18 unless you need the caliper clearance. I run 11 & 13" Forgestar F14's on Hoosier R7's. I have ran every other tire out there and I always find my way back to Hoosier R or A's.

Great thread response. I am in same boat as thread starter. Looking for a 18 inch wheel setup front and rear for R888R tires.

Do the stock offsets clear other BBKs if I decide to get an AP racing BBK in the future? What offsets for the 18x11 and 18x13 specs are used to clear oem and other aftermarket BBK of the Z06 and Zr1.
